My main approach in couples therapy is Emotional Focused Therapy because it transforms conflict and strengthens connection.
Are you struggling with a life transition, feelings of insecurity or other emotional pain? Do you desire less conflict or more connection in your relationship? Often, my clients arrive with anxiety, feelings of shame, or are suffering from challenging relationship dynamics. Others, arrive unsure of the exact source of their problem, but know they want more fulfillment. Perhaps you have awareness regarding your issues, but still struggle to interrupt negative patterns or grow beyond reoccurring challenges. If you long to improve your relationship with yourself or others, I would love to work with you.

Therapy is a place for you to name areas of pain, a place to feel without judgment, and a place to reclaim what is yours. Shame is the source of so much of this pain and judgment, convincing you that you are broken. Shame is often so intertwined with sexuality because of the societal silence around the topic. Perhaps sex is painful, perhaps you are more aware of others desires than your own, perhaps you feel empty from running on fumes and enjoyment is the last thing on your mind. Whatever the reason, engaging your sexual health can help overall wellness, and ultimately be the way back into relationship with yourself!

I have a broad range of clinical training and experience related to individual, couples, families and group therapy.
I will actively use my training and experience to help you meet your needs & goals. Successful treatment is a direct result of mutual efforts, honesty, respect, and collaboration. Life is full of transitions. Many transitions require skill to navigate. Some happen easily and others require thought, planning and occasionally outside help. I regularly help people manage depression, anxiety, life & work transitions, relationship problems, the processing of and recovery from trauma, and developmental issues throughout the lifespan.

For the past 20 years I have been privileged to support individuals and couples as a pastoral counselor and more recently as a mental health counselor.
Seeking a counselor can be a daunting experience and I commend you for your courage in taking this step. I work primarily with teens, young adults, men, and couples who desire to create space to work on areas of concern in their lives and relationships. I work alongside clients to get to the ‘thing beneath the thing’ of what they are experiencing and struggling with as individuals and couples, so that they can move from minimizing, avoidance, self-contempt, etc.. towards a compassionate self-awareness, recovery, greater coping, balance in life, development of new understandings and skills, and thriving.

My clients are viewed from a holistic perspective in order to promote insight and connections on the path to self-fulfillment. You may not know it, but grief, trauma, rejection, abandonment, and more could be holding you back. I put you first in this highly personal and strictly confidential, therapeutic relationship to dig into the vulnerabilities and thought processes that are contributing to negative feelings, undesired repetitive choices, or unfulfilling relationships. My empowerment strategies draw from several theories of psychology to examine the root causes of undesired behaviors or promoting new behaviors.

Traditional psychotherapy works toward congruence in a persons thinking, emotions, actions, and life choices. Body-oriented therapy understands that the body is also profoundly affected by our life experiences. Identifying and releasing attitudes and old images held in our physical structure adds an important component to therapy. This promotes lasting change, allowing for free flow of life energy from within us so we can more fully realize our life, our joy. I am also founder of the Seattle School of Body-Psychotherapy, and enterprise of Body-Psychotherapy of Seattle.

Over the past six years, it has been such a pleasure walking with my clients through their journeys of healing and change. I have had the privilege of sitting with parents struggling through the heartache of divorce, immigrants and children of immigrants who are making a home against all odds, college students fighting dominant culture norms, survivors of marital abuse, and those fighting to escape their childhood trauma. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in education and non-profits in India, and I am astounded, then and now, by the human capacity for resilience and strength in the face of hardship.

I provide therapy services to youth, adults, couples, and families.
As a systemic therapist, I believe in the exploration of all cultural and societal messages, norms, and values that have shaped my clients into who they are today. Making the brave decision to begin therapy is often preceded by many obstacles and challenges, and it is important to me to take the necessary time to walk through clients' stories and reflect on their experiences. I work to create a safe, trusting, and open environment where my clients and I can exchange constructive feedback. I believe that the therapy room is a space for emotional vulnerability, reflection, and growth.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
