I strive to consistently bring my own sense of authenticity to every session as I believe that therapy at its core is successful due to the relationship between clinician and client. As your therapist I promise to be present, challenge you gently but firmly when you need me to, and to empathetically and truly care about what you have to say. I have sixteen years of experience in the mental health field addressing issues ranging from depression/anxiety to substance use to feelings around gender and sexuality. I work with individuals and families but also have a strong passion working with couples and relationships.

Please be you. Maybe you don't know who that it is. Or you do––and you're not a fan. Either way, you deserve to be the proud narrator of your own life story. As a gay man, I'm all too familiar with masking for social and ro mantic success. Low self-esteem, social anxiety, and addiction issues are common results when you dislike the sound of your voice. Together, we can bring your inner voice out. I like to use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in offering you tangible tools that act as rose-colored goggles. For who you are today. Let's work on characterization and plot. And let's give your life story a rewrite, if necessary.

You deserve a therapist who is a good fit for you. A nonjudgmental listener who accepts you for who you are while also facilitating the change you want to see. A professional who can provide valuable insights within a safe space to share and explore. Someone who sees the value in understanding and processing your personal history without losing focus on the present.

Life not quite what you expected? Come in and we can turn it around together. I have training and experience with a variety of issues including substance and non-substance addictions, deafness and hearing loss, relationship problems, depression, anxiety, adjusting to life changes, grief and loss, divorce, identifying and evolving toward life goals. Intimacy, improving self-esteem, self-confidence, and ability to communicate are often areas that people chose to work on. Sharing your life with another can be joyful and difficult. Therapy is a neutral place to explore the relationship.

I combine many powerful modalities, including Jungian inner work, neuroscience, fitness, career, and spirituality, but I will carefully tailor my approach to honor your unique needs and possibilities.
Love. Joy. Ecstasy. Awe. In my 18 years of clinical experience, I’ve discovered that we each have far more capacity for these expansive feelings than we often realize. Whether you are contending with many challenges, or feel ready to fly through the stars, I can work with you collaboratively to shape a life that fulfills your highest dreams, and maybe even soars beyond them. I’m eager to share what I’ve learned about our abilities to break out of old patterns of pain, fear, and shame into fruitful creativity and communion with the most inspiring aspects of being alive.

It feels like anxiety has a hold on your life. You wake up in the middle of the night overwhelmed by all of your responsibilities. You’re not able to give all of yourself to your personal relationships. The people who once felt close to you now feel distant. You often feel like a fraud, and consistently discredit yourself and your experiences. You also worry that others might discover that you’re a “fraud.” You’re reluctant to go after new opportunities (promotions, etc.) because you don’t feel like you deserve them. You’ve decided it’s time to change this.

As a gay man from the south, I know firsthand how important it is to work with a counselor who can provide the safety to explore one's self, identity, and relationships within a world that does not always feel accepting.
My clients want change and growth in their lives and/or their relationships, but they often don't know where to start. Or, they might have made the enormous first steps of moving towards change and growth only to feel stuck and unsure of how to move forward. My clients find that within the experience of being truly heard, accepted, validated, and supported, that the door between where they are and the change they want begins to unlock and slowly open. My approach focuses on unlocking and discovering the strengths that we don't always realize we have, on building new coping skills, and on creating new understanding and connections.

I offer expert help for struggling parents and families. For youth, coaching helps kids navigate the challenges in their lives, whether it be isolation, behavioral problems, emotional outbursts, hanging with the wrong crowd, or clarifying college and/or career plans. For families, coaching helps resolve conflicts and strengthen relationships.

We all find ourselves in circumstances at one time or another that call for adjusting to change or making decisions, whether it's charting a path through grief and loss, developmental transitions, job loss, recovering from trauma or the challenges of parenting. Therapy can be helpful in sorting through confusing thoughts and feelings, gaining insight, establishing a course of action amongst different choices, and building confidence through experiencing a deeper understanding of yourself, all in the context of a caring relationship.

As a clinical psychologist I work with clients who are attempting to change unrewarding or isolating patterns of relating to others, or struggling to modify unproductive thoughts or feelings. The process of therapy as I practice it relies on developing a trusting and collaborative relationship between client and therapist. It is in this atmosphere of support, encouragement and respect that areas of concern and patterns of behavior can be understood and changed. I work with both individuals and couples. I have advanced training in treating depression, helping couples work productively in relationships, modification of addictive behaviors, and cognitive assessment.

I have a particular interest in working with men and wo men who struggle with addiction.
Sometimes life feels too big, too complex, and too messy to get your head around. If you're ready to make changes in your life, but aren't sure where to start, I can help you develop a plan to make it happen. I can support you in your desire to stop destructive behaviors and create new, healthier ways of living. We go at a pace that is comfortable for you, taking on problems one-at-a-time. Together we tackle the things that are keeping you from the kind of life you want to live.

I've served as director of a Seattle sexual addiction recovery agency, hosted a syndicated radio show on recovery and relationships, and am the author of Men's Secret Wars and The Boundaries Book.
I believe that almost all change that occurs in therapy comes from forming a safe therapeutic relationship, and in the context of that relationship increasing your awareness of self, challenging your old beliefs, establishing appropriate boundaries in relationships with others, and experiencing and letting go of old pain. My task is to support you in that process. I tend to be active in therapy. I ask questions, offer observations, and look for patterns in the client's life. However, I believe the client is the final expert on themselves, and I trust in their unique healing process.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
