Experiential therapy can be an effective method for treating Autism, ADHD and pathological demand avoidance.
ADHD, Autism, Gifted, Pathological Demand Avoidance? I work with people and families sorting through the roots of their emotional challenges. I am passionate about exploring the impacts of neurodivergence while healing trauma. I deeply understand the intersection of neurodiversity, disability and therapy to compassionately provide effective help to people who might not see results from typical therapy.

With a therapeutic style that is compassionate, warm, relational and strengths-based, I collaborate with clients as they move towards their goals and desires. The clients I work with are often learning to cultivate healthy relationships, healing trauma, tending to anxiety, depression and neurodivergence (often late-diagnosed ADHD and/or autism), exploring identity (racial, gender, sexual etc.), grieving a loss, and/or cultivating a stronger sense of self-worth. If you would like to learn more, I would be happy to schedule a free consultation call!

Life Happens! Sometimes it helps to have compassionate and non-judgmental support as you work through life issues and transitions. I offer a client centered and holistic therapeutic approach that aims to bring to light the associations between: nutrition/diet; stress; family history; support systems & resources; life experiences; environment; and issues related to current and/or historical oppression; and how YOUR body, mind, and spirit have been reacting. I believe in encouraging and empowering my clients towards achieving the results they seek. I help clients identify and utilize their strengths and to identify and release unhealthy practices or defense mechanisms.

My lived experience and training merge to create a helpful skillset that has a positive impact on my work. I work with people who are neurodivergent themselves and/ or people who are trying to understand how to best support a loved one who is neurodivergent. In my work with couples and families, my clients are wanting to understand how to navigate different brain types often alongside navigating very different lived experiences, and different social backgrounds.

I am an integrative and culturally sensitive driven therapist who works with adults to unlearn systemic inequalities and process intergenerational trauma, grief, and anxiety, so you can confidently befriend your feelings, navigate life transitions, step into authenticity, and feel more at home in yourself. Often times when we are going through something difficult, it can be hard to see our way out. This may lead to spiraling thoughts, a lost sense of security and safety, thinking "I'm not good enough", consistently feeling on edge, and feeling disconnected from ourselves and others.

Current openings! Many people think their problems aren't bad enough to seek help and continue suffering in the status quo - but if you're reading this, you must be getting exhausted! You might be wondering why you have such big reactions to minor inconveniences, or why things seem to come easy for everyone else. You've probably tried all the "self care" and are frustrated that you're still struggling. I have a particular interest in working with late or self diagnosed neurodivergent women and chronic illness sufferers. If your anxiety or pain is increasing, or you just have a sense that things are "off," maybe I can help!

Sometimes it is really hard to persist. Making change or accepting reality can be confusing. Reaching out to a therapist can be scary. With empathy and an anti-oppression approach, I can help you examine what's keeping you stuck, overwhelmed, frozen, or confused. I specialize in working people who move through the world differently, particularly trans and queer people.

Accepting new clients for remote therapy. I work with teens and adults who are struggling with overwhelming emotions, such as depression, grief, and anxiety, with a focus on being inclusive to those with diagnoses of serious mental illness (such as bipolar or schizophrenia) and/or intellectual or developmental disabilities. I offer somatic therapy to support resilience and nervous system regulation. My focus is on attachment and healing from stress and trauma. The basis of my work is trauma-informed care with an emphasis on anti-oppression theory. Somatic, or body-based therapy, can be particularly helpful for grounding, connection with self and others, integrating past and current experience, and embodiment. If you are looking for ways to shift out of survival patterns and into deeper presence in your life, you're in the right place. I work with adults and kids.

I come to this work with a background in social work and public health, and am passionate about creating a space where my clients feel seen, heard, and validated. I have had experience both as a client and as a therapist with DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and this informs the work that I do. As someone with a background both personally and professionally shaped by trauma, I am dedicated to practicing therapy in a strengths-based and trauma-informed manner. I bring my queer and neurodivergent identities to this work and feel at home working with queer clients and non-monogamous relationships.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
