My practice is focused on the resolution of trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which effectively and efficiently treats trauma. Trauma can be a single event such as a car accident or sexual assault, or could be more complicated, involving childhood trauma. Memories of these events can cause big feelings to erupt, avoidance of similar situations, nightmares, and even flashbacks that make it feel like the event is still happening to you. Below is a simple, animated description of how EMDR works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKrfH43srg8

Welcome! Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life: death and taxes. I would add a third certainty: change. Change is difficult for most people; even positive change can stir up anxious feelings in us. But change can also be freeing, exhilarating and something to be embraced. I hope to help you on your change journey. I work with adults (age 18 and up) on all types of life stage challenges and transitions and the mental health difficulties those changes often bring.

As a systemic therapist, I believe in the exploration of all cultural and societal messages, norms, and values that have shaped my clients into who they are today. Making the brave decision to begin therapy is often preceded by many obstacles and challenges, and it is important to me to take the necessary time to walk through clients' stories and reflect on their experiences. I work to create a safe, trusting, and open environment where my clients and I can exchange constructive feedback. I believe that the therapy room is a space for emotional vulnerability, reflection, and growth.

**I have a few times available this summer. Please inquire to see if those times may work for you!** Are you feeling 'stuck,' disconnected, or having troubles with stressors in your life? When we're feeling disconnected to those around us it challenges the way we think about ourselves and our world. I invite you, your children, or your whole family to come and reconnect with yourself and/or those around you. Together we can create a peaceful, judgment-free space to explore your thoughts and experiences at your own pace and in your own way.

Ever think: "How did I end up here?" or "I never imagined {life event} would happen to me!" You are not alone! We can all relate to these sentiments. Most people do not end up in therapy because circumstances are unicorns and rainbows. Are you struggling with loss, or making meaning out of events that have left you feeling uncertain, shaken, in agony? Do you feel like you are starring in a scene from the film Ground Hog Day, where life is a series of frustrating, repeating events? You can make a successful transition to break this cycle, whatever that personal change is. You will get a sense of control back. A little Zen. Some hope.

In my work as a counselor I utilize these skills and insight to help people of all ages, identities, and walks of life. My approach to counseling is not confined to one specific framework but incorporates a variety of modalities tailored to each client's unique needs. I am humanistic in style and often utilize mindfulness based strategies for increased insight and awareness.

My ideal clients are couples in early recovery from substance use disorders or other addictions. Early recovery can be a critical time for both partners to quickly gain the skills needed to be successful and stay strong as a couple. I also have extensive experience working with youth and young adults with substance use and mental health challenges.

We all experience anxiety, fear, depression or suffering - especially when faced with life transitions. Teens transitioning to adulthood, families transitioning through marriage/parenthood/divorce, and individuals transitioning through career changes are all common, but often stressful experiences. These transitions also have the potential to bring joy, reflection and peace. However, we all need help sometimes to find the joy in our lives. I particularly enjoy helping adolescents and young adults find their path through the world.

Sometimes little things pile up and become insurmountable. Tension at work, friction with friends, family, or co-workers, recent or older hurts wear you down. Sometimes big things seem overwhelming. Job loss, a death, medical crisis, or moving stop you in your tracks. Sometimes worry or fear attaches to something specific or feels like it is everywhere at once. The support of a psychotherapist can provide a safe haven in tumultuous times. This is a place where you can hear yourself think, express your feelings, hear your own voice, discover your inner wisdom, come to solutions that are authentically yours.

I work with all clients who are 18 years and older. I deliver both individual therapy as well as services for families. I work with a variety of clients who want to work on depression, anxiety, trauma, and abuse issues from the past to the present. The goal of therapy is to help each client develop coping skills to help manage their mental health symptoms. While my approach tends to be eclectic, I draw from different evidence-based interventions to provide tailored sessions for my clients. Some of the modalities I use include CBT, DBT, ACT, and Narrative therapy to help my clients become the best version of themselves.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer Employee Assistance Plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.

What is an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP)?

Employee Assistance Plans are purchased by employers for the benefit of their employees. EAPs typically assist employees with referrals and may also provide the first few sessions of therapy free of charge, with the patient's regular health insurance kicking in after those initial sessions. EAP benefits often apply to all types of therapy without the need for a medical diagnosis, making it easier to access couples therapy, therapy for life transitions, and other non-medical counseling. Just as with standard health insurance, clients should always check that a provider accepts their EAP benefits before scheduling.
