I'm trained in Evidenced Based Models like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping).
Life is full of transitions, expected and unexpected, and this can be hard on individuals and families as a whole. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I seek to help you cope, decrease emotional distress, and bring balance and meaning to your current situation. Being a therapist of color has equipped me to be sensitive, open and authentic to issues such as privilege, classism, oppression, racism, as they may relate to emotional pain and suffering. I believe that each person develops unique coping skills to deal with life’s stresses.

It is difficult to deal with strong feelings of anger, guilt sadness, grief, fear, or worry on your own. At the same time, it can be extremely difficult to let others around you know when you need help. You may have even been told that you just need to "tough it out", and "deal with it" all on your own. I'm here to say that you don't have to. Managing difficult emotions is easier said than done when going through stressful situations such as losing a loved one, ending a relationship, or dealing with financial stress. I am here if you are ready to make positive changes in your life, and are tired of doing it alone.

My practice is focused on the resolution of trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which effectively and efficiently treats trauma. Trauma can be a single event such as a car accident or sexual assault, or could be more complicated, involving childhood trauma. Memories of these events can cause big feelings to erupt, avoidance of similar situations, nightmares, and even flashbacks that make it feel like the event is still happening to you. Below is a simple, animated description of how EMDR works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKrfH43srg8

Limited Morning only availability at this time. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and I primarily work with adolescents and young adults. I believe that the therapeutic relationship above all can provide an opportunity to heal, grow, and learn about oneself as an individual in the world. That human connection in counseling is powerful. Sometimes asking for help can be difficult and my view of facing that challenge, is why not utilize all the resources we have in life to find connection, joy, and skills for success. If you are facing challenges in life and need somewhere to explore these, email me!

Individual therapy with me always begins by learning how to check-in with our nervous system to ensure we are creating a neutral and/or safe space that's required to begin to take a deeper look at what's underneath some of the challenging situations you may be responding to. Therapy is an insight-oriented process where we'll improve our ability to self-regulate and connect with others. I work from a polyvagal informed approach which is also known as the science of safety and connection. It's through this approach that we will begin to understand how your nervous system responds to cues of safety and danger.

I have advanced training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and use this most often due to its focus on behavior change, wide applicability, and effectiveness.
I view therapy as a partnership between client and therapist and approach issues from a behavior change perspective. I work with clients to identify areas that are causing distress, understand how they may be contributing to these problems, and identify changes they can actively make to yield the results they want to see. Because of the many positions I have held in the mental health field during the past 17 years, I am able to pull from a variety of evidenced-based treatment modalities and easily adjust course in order to best meet a client’s needs. Please refer to my website bio for more. Initial inquiries preferred via email.

I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy to help others achieve their goals.
I believe that everyone does the best they can with the skills they currently have. But sometimes life has some challenges, even unexpected ones, that can impact our mental health and well-being. These challenges don’t have to be faced alone. Through these challenges new skills can be acquired to help deal with the stressors life may bring. Together, we will identify goals you would like to achieve from counseling and work towards reaching them.

My life experiences combined with my training give me a compassionate understanding of people and their struggles. Mother of six, one killed in an accident, grandmother of seven, one developmentally delayed. These traumas, though sad, have been great teachers. I use humor and common sense in my own humanistic style. Improving your sense of humor will help with personal growth, relationships, grief, pain, and your emotional and physical health. Designing Therapeutic Gardens gives me a sense of the cycle of life and I use Healing Horticulture with some of my clients.

My preferred approach is cognitive behavioral within a systems perspective that looks at each person's functioning in all domains.
People come to counseling when they have problems that cause them unhappiness and pain, and do not know how to manage on their own. I have over 25 years of experience helping people cope with the challenges of their ever changing lives. I believe my role as a therapist is to teach my clients what I know, and to guide them through thinking and behavior changes that will bring them to a place of peace and contentment. I strive to help my clients improve their level of self-awareness, to increase their understanding of and empathy for themselves and others, and to increase their ability to communicate affectively.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
