I integrate culturally sensitive techniques while integrating systemic, postmodern, humanistic therapy modalities, including Bowen, Gottman and Attachment theor.
Are you feeling the weight of productivity culture, constantly balancing the demands of work, relationships, and self-care? Or perhaps, you and your partner are facing challenges that seem too complex to navigate alone—communication breakdowns, trust issues, or the stress of life transitions. These struggles are real, and they deserve to be met with a thoughtful, high-touch approach that honors your experiences, while fostering healing and connection.

Being bilingual and bicultural, Michael is able to provide therapy that is culturally sensitive and competent and is able to work with individuals, couples, and families where there may be language and cultural barriers between spouses, parents, and/or their children.
With over seventeen years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, Michael has successfully helped many clients with complex issues that negatively impact their lives and their families in significant ways. He believes in treating clients holistically (mind, body, and spirit) and that the work clients do outside of therapy is as important as the work they do in session. The priorities are helping clients develop skills and providing resources that will support them to make lasting change.

Therapy in English and Spanish. Do you find yourself struggling to meet expectations set up by society about roles that do not resonate with you? Or maybe, you feel distant and disconnected from your partner which makes you second guess your life together? You may be fed up of trying to please people all the time to meet those expectations. Or being exhausted by continuously worrying about the future of your relationship with your partner. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way.

Do you struggle with an inner voice that tells you that you are failing or not enough? Is it difficult to identify what you want? Do you consistently prioritize others over yourself? We live in a world that bombards us with messages about who has value and who does not. We are told “just try harder” and things will change. My clients come to therapy because despite a commitment to this hustle for worth, they remain dissatisfied. They feel stuck and resonate with the idea of putting their life on hold until they lose the weight, get the promotion, etc. Many say they are ready for something different but aren't sure where to start.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists
How does culturally sensitive therapy work?
A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.
How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?
Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?
While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.
Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?
Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
