In my 40 years as a psychologist my goal has been to provide the safe nurturing environment that creates a productive client/therapist relationship. I have never forgotten my early experiences in seeking help from a therapist, wondering what it would be like, and if it would really help. I appreciated the understanding and insight I received then, and throughout my life, sometimes with my husband, I have found different kinds of therapy that were helpful to me and to my clients.

Not accepting new clients
I am unable to accept new clients at this time. Relationships may be difficult to say the least. Sometimes we feel blindsided by life's twists and turns. We all struggle at times to feel understood or with self doubt, while searching for solutions to overwhelming problems. Whether you are an individual or couple troubled by a present, past or current event, taking that first step, towards talking to someone who may be able to help sort things out, may be one of the most difficult things you do. I would like to make it a little easier.

Whether your goals are relational, occupational or personal, I work in partnership with you as I respect your ability to know yourself.
Therapy is something you have probably contemplated for awhile. It takes a lot of courage to work on tough issues that are making your life less fulfilling than you have envisioned. People seek counseling for different reasons. It can be something from your past that you feel it is time to work on, relationship disharmony, or help finding your direction and motivation to reach your goals. I work with you to overcome whatever blocks are in the way of living the life you want to live. The important thing is to bring more joy into your life.

I accept most forms of insurance. Are you feeling sad, anxious, overwhelmed, or have you simply found yourself wanting more from your life? People seek therapy for a variety of reasons, and this seeking is often the first brave step toward living into a sense of greater possibility and deeper relationships! I view therapy first and foremost as healing that arises from a conversation. That conversation can be transformative, can take many forms, and is an act of co-creation between you and me. Let's help you create the life you were meant to live!

The origin of the word, "heal", means to make "whole". As we are affected by the inevitable challenges and traumas in life, we tend to adapt by splitting off essential parts of who we are. These adaptations assist for a while, before they ultimately start harming us. It simply doesn't work to be so internally fractured. Becoming "whole" demands that we start including and re-membering all that has been lost. It's a rigorous undertaking that can be overwhelming on one's own. The role of the therapist is to be a companion to the inner world, to hold a map when we are lost, and to witness all aspects of who we are.

I am a licensed mental health counselor, and have been in practice for over 30 years. Over the years I've worked with a diverse population of individuals with a broad range of life's gifts and challenges. My abiding concern in this work is developing an attentive and respectful relationship where a deepening collaboration is possible. I will be interested in your current life, your history and memories, your dreams and aspirations. I will also be interested in how your body, it's symptoms and sensations, aches, pains and illnesses speak to us as we carefully listen and attune.

While my practice is based largely on the humanistic theories described by Relational Psychoanalysis and Existential Phenomenology, I am also trained in and utilize adult integrative psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
The practice of therapy is often the practice of relationship in a safe, structured, and contained environment. My clients deal with issues related to trauma, depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, relationship, sexual orientation and gender identity. Each client comes in with a different story, background, and constellation of experiences and capabilities. When we engage and work together, it is that connection that leads to therapeutic change.

My approach is shaped by relational psychodynamic, attachment, and somatic theories, as well as humanistic and existential phenomenological approaches to therapy.
Being human is both beautiful and hard. Along with joy and happiness, we can feel anxious, depressed or experience other forms of emotional distress. Together, we will investigate what your experiences of grief, loneliness, isolation, and anxiety may be trying to tell you about your life and where it may be possible to change these conditions to find more joy and happiness. We will explore larger questions about what it means to be human. As a therapist at Self Space, I seek to create a safe space where you can feel seen, heard, and understood so that you can have the courage to look inward and discover what may be holding you back.

I use a relational and trauma-informed approach, drawing upon evidence-based models such as attachment theory, emotion focused therapy, and family systems theory.
We all experience suffering, distress, or relational difficulty at different times in our lives. I work from a Christian worldview and believe that healing and growth take place within supportive relationships. Thus, I seek to offer you a safe and trusted space to process the vulnerable parts of your story. We will collaboratively explore relationships and patterns that have influenced current behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. The goal will be to uncover the root causes of your concerns and address past wounds that keep you stuck and hold you back from the flourishing and wholeness you were created for.

Utilizing attachment, systems, relational, and behavioral theories, I work collaboratively and non-judgmentally with you to create an individualized plan that incorporates research-based interventions.
Sometimes feelings and behaviors become obstacles to accessing your strength. If you don't accept yourself as you are, you can't change--a paradox, but true. Self-acceptance can be difficult, especially with history of abuse, trauma, or opression in which shame/guilt become integral to your sense of self. Destructive behavior, in whatever form, has its own logic, but is understandable given your history. We cope in ways that serve to protect ourselves in childhood--serving a useful purpose back then. But now, they prevent you from having stable, close relationships and feeling an empowered sense of self.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
