I draw on several approaches for treatment including EMDR, mindfulness-based CBT, and traditional talk therapy, tailoring my practice toward the needs of each person. I use a humanistic attachment lens informed by interpersonal neurobiology. I primarily work with people who have complex intersections of identity and those who have experienced trauma. The trauma may surface through symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, or difficulty managing relationships. I work with a lot of individuals who have experienced complex trauma, developmental trauma, a single traumatic event, emotional neglect, and physical neglect.

I aim to provide a safe space for my clients so that they may experience greater personal growth, healing, and insight. You may be trying to face your emotional scars alone. Yet together, we can explore these topics that may be difficult for you. I want to encourage your growth in self-compassion and self-worth as we work to reframe your unfavorable coping mechanisms. Life is a journey with plenty of obstacles to overcome, yet taking this step to live differently, with more hope, and to live more authentically, is worthwhile.

I love connecting with people from all backgrounds. I feel as though I am learning from others, just as much as they may be learning about themselves throughout the therapeutic process. I am in a unique position to treat others with unconditional, positive regard. I feel it is imperative to come from a judgement free place, while actively seeking to understand myself and others. I want to create a space that welcomes vulnerability, trust, and respect.

Many of us seek therapy at different periods of our lives for different reasons, such as couple and family conflicts, losing loved ones, life transition issues, addiction, sadness, anxiety, and depression. We sometimes may not figure out what we are going through. Unknowns and uncertainties may increase in our lives and become unmanageable, or we are unable to fulfill our search for meaning. Therapy helps us cope with difficult and painful emotions, figure out what we are going through, and name it. Carl Rogers defines growth as any kind of movement toward “self-esteem, flexibility, or respect and compassion for self and others."

The origin of the word, "heal", means to make "whole". As we are affected by the inevitable challenges and traumas in life, we tend to adapt by splitting off essential parts of who we are. These adaptations assist for a while, before they ultimately start harming us. It simply doesn't work to be so internally fractured. Becoming "whole" demands that we start including and re-membering all that has been lost. It's a rigorous undertaking that can be overwhelming on one's own. The role of the therapist is to be a companion to the inner world, to hold a map when we are lost, and to witness all aspects of who we are.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
