Counseling is a deeply personal journey. I work to empower and guide clients toward their own unique solutions that can bring order and managability to life and to relationships. Individuals will be challenged to discover their own unique areas of strength upon which to build skill in overcoming problems and issues that contribute to feeling "stuck." Couples will be challenged to identify individual and collective patterns that interfere with relational closeness, safety, and intimacy. Older children and teenagers will be encouraged to learn valuable skills to help them cope with life's struggles in an environment of safety and trust.

I specialize in working with those impacted by anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief and loss, changes in roles and relationships, perinatal adjustments, and relational codependency.
Hi, I'm Kate. I provide counseling to individuals and couples in the north Seattle area. My approach to therapy begins with relationship as I believe both harm and healing happen within the context of relationships. Perhaps you are tired of feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed. Maybe you've experienced a significant loss that has shifted your roles and beliefs. You don't have to figure this out alone. My focus is to develop a trusting relationship with you and provide a safe environment where you can tell your story, feel accepted, and experience the wholeness and healing that comes out of that process.

Waitlist for new clients
Wait list for new clients as of 11/7/24. ‘I’m broken.’ Life and society tell us this, whether from neurodivergence, religious injury, attachment wounds, chronic pain, or struggling with parenting. Feeling inadequate can lead to isolation, depression, anxiety, and dread that there's too much wrong to fix. It feels true. Yet, my clients are capable, creative, loving, intelligent, and motivated. We’re all failing and excelling at once, making it overwhelming to know how to move forward. Counseling offers the space and time to slow down, find direction, and live meaningfully amidst the chaos.

Experiences. They create meaning, create beliefs, create rules, created your views of self and other. Your lived experiences influence the choices you make, how you show up in your relationships, and how you interact with the world. Experiences can leave you exhausted, depleted, and void of hope. Like a wave that crashes over you, pulling you under, tumbling and tossing you beneath its power, leaving you frantic for the way up, searching for that breath of hope.

People were created for meaningful relationships with one another. Everyone has a unique story they want to share, and therapy provides space and openness to explore this journey. Due to our environment, culture, family background and life circumstances, we look at life through a lens that shapes our present thoughts and behaviors. The psychotherapeutic modalities I use in treatment are Solution Focused Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Experiential Therapy, Object Relations Therapy, and Structural and Strategic Family Therapy. Marriage and Family therapists look at the entire family system.

I believe that individuals, couples and families come to therapy with unique strengths and tools that can be identified and built upon in session. Acknowledging the relationships, communities, and cultures that impact your life is essential for making lasting change. By looking at the big picture, including your internal and interpersonal worlds, we can address that issues that brought you to therapy and make lasting change in your life.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
