As a family systems therapist with an interest in couples reconciliation therapy and healing relational trauma from infidelity, I am passionate about walking beside you to work through the pain and confusion of your life situation.  Intimate betrayal is one of the most devastating and disorienting events that can happen to a relationship.  The betrayed partner is left questioning fundamental beliefs and wrestling with the very existence of truth, love and relationship history. I also work with couples who long to enhance communication, connection, and build shared long term goals and values.

In the aftermath of traumatic experiences, life might feel like a bit of a dumpster fire. Weeks, months, or years afterwards, it can feel overwhelming and confusing to untangle the complex web of how trauma has affected your life, relationships, health, and wellbeing. Perhaps you're feeling disconnected from others or from yourself, struggling with trust, or finding it difficult to manage daily life. It may be the first time you're talking about it. These responses are normal reactions to abnormal situations, and you don't have to navigate them alone.

You wake up in the mornings and don’t feel rested. You're feeling irritable and you've been arguing with your kids or partner. You struggle to stay present, and you’re having a hard time focusing on household tasks, work, and parenting. Anxiety and overwhelm weigh heavy on you, but you’re holding it all in so you can prioritize your family's needs. You're struggling, and you feel burned out. It’s time to do something about it and put yourself first

“Loving ourselves through the process of owning our story is the bravest thing we will ever do” Brene Brown. My clients are those who are ready and willing to take ownership of their story in a way that feels authentic and empowering. This story ownership often involves self identity work, discovering or reclaiming values, setting boundaries/interpersonal work, learning how to both accept emotions and take action, self compassion, and learning to "come home" to yourself. Common issues I support are anxiety, depression, relationships, pregnancy and postpartum, life transitions, ADHD, perfectionism, and family of origin issues.

I view my client’s struggles as I would the struggles of all humans. Our struggles come from something that happened to us yet has become our responsibility to change. Whether it be a defense mechanism, modeled behavior from childhood, or traumatic incidents (acute or prolonged), there is a point in time when we must accept the burden of control. I like to say that we have more control over our lives than we’d like to be responsible for. When something devastating happens to us (a prick to the finger or a shattered heart) how we manage that pain determines our level of suffering, thus our quality of life.

What would it feel like to have less distress and more hope in your life? You may be feeling anxious. Worried. Fearful. Confused. Overwhelmed. Perhaps you are trying to make sense of a troubled relationship or grieving the loss of someone (or something) significant in your life. Maybe some problematic behavior has left you thinking things are spinning out of control.

Family Business is in a league of its own. I help family businesses navigate change (or stagnation) by fostering clear decision-making, and helping clients separate family dynamics from business operations. As a former therapist, I noticed that when my family therapy clients had a family business, therapy would only get them so far... At some point, they had to address the nuts and bolts of operations: "I know I hate this position, but the business would fail if I stopped. But things have GOT to change." Sound familiar? Creating new relationship dynamics and habits means changing how you work together, at home AND the office.

It feels like you and your partner speak different languages. You make well-intentioned commitments, but struggle to follow through. This leads to frustration and resentment. You're always running late, and one of you feels burdened by needing to "pick up the slack" at home. Sometimes, ADHD makes it difficult for you to give your partner the attention and support that they need. To others, it seems like you have it all together. You recognize that this is because you're "masking," and everything falls apart when you get home. This struggle makes difficult to enjoy your time together. You've decided it's time to make a change.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists

How does cognitive processing therapy work?

A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?

CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?

A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
