Are you feeling not right in your body or as if you don’t belong to the gender you were assigned at birth? Are you afraid to come out to someone you love? Did your partner or spouse tell you he/she/they are transgender and you are left with confusion and fear? Are you a parent of a child who came out to you and identifies as LBGTQIA and you don’t know how to process your feelings or take a deeper look within? Do you use substances and feel stigmatized by being called an “addict” with no hope for support? Do you use substances and are not ready to stop, but want someone to talk to that will accept you where you are at?

Effective 5/23/23, I am only providing services to clients seeking psychological evaluations. No counseling services are offered in my practice. Evaluations are commonly sought for concerns, such as ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disorders, mood disorders, anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, to name a few. Some clients who are experiencing Gender Dysphoria also seek evaluations to support medical transition services.

I enjoy working with people within the LGBTQ+ community, specifically people in early adulthood. I love working with first generation Americans and learning about the experiences growing up as a third culture kid. My ideal client is someone looking for clarity around who they want to be and where they see themselves in the world, a common theme among younger LGBTQ adults. I love working with clients who feel in conflict or "out of step" with the world, as I strongly believe pressure to conform and "fit in" are often ways in which marginalized experiences are devalued.

I offer a warm, validating and authentic space in which you can explore, deeply examine, and accept who you are as well as seek to change alongside someone who genuinely cares. You may experience the occasional gentle challenge, but diverse perspectives and social justice are valued here; your worldview will be treated as valid. You are the expert on you, so my priority is facilitating your search for your own answers over presenting mine. I point out beliefs, connections and patterns without presenting my interpretation as the best or only one. Strategies and conclusions you buy into are the most likely to have a lasting impact.

I draw on several approaches for treatment including EMDR, mindfulness-based CBT, and traditional talk therapy, tailoring my practice toward the needs of each person. I use a humanistic attachment lens informed by interpersonal neurobiology. I primarily work with people who have complex intersections of identity and those who have experienced trauma. The trauma may surface through symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, or difficulty managing relationships. I work with a lot of individuals who have experienced complex trauma, developmental trauma, a single traumatic event, emotional neglect, and physical neglect.

If you have anxiety for the future, depression from your past, feeling alienated and other intrusive thoughts I can help you better understand their origin. What drives me is helping you discover the sources for your emotional conundrums and entanglements. These life riddles can be tamed so that they do not continue to rule your days. Isolation with these matters only serves to create more distance between you and managing your life. What I do is give you the tools to cut through the twisted patterns of your life and create the new path.

Today's world is often extremely hard to navigate. It makes sense if you are just trying to survive and live, especially when stressors--expected or unexpected--or trauma enter into the story, leaving chaos in their wake to sort through and heal from. For this reason, creating and sustaining a safe and trusting therapy environment is most important to me when working with you. I am able to do this through a client centered approach that reflects and embraces honoring where you are in your journey.

Mental health challenges are more than a diagnosis. From neurochemical imbalances such as ADHD to emotional disturbances like major depression, the symptoms and impact differ for each person. Larger issues such as life direction, personal ethics, and the family expectations we grew up with all result in different responses to overwhelming emotions and situations. Your mental health journey should be a collaborative experience that rises to meet your needs and supports you through your challenges. I am here to help you find your path and walk with you, even if you aren't yet sure where you are traveling.

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
