My approach to therapy draws from a blend of systems-based, narrative, cognitive-behavioral, and acceptance and mindfulness-based approaches.
I am deeply committed to creating a space where you feel safe to explore your inner experiences without fear of judgment or criticism. My work emphasizes empathy, collaboration, and respect for everyone’s unique story. I believe that effective therapy requires acknowledgment of the oppressive systems that contribute to life's challenges and underlie many mental health struggles. Together, we can explore how therapy can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, build resilience, and create positive change in your life aligned with your values.

In relationship with counseling participants, my approach is trauma-informed, person-centered, and I draw on somatic and mindfulness-based interventions. This means that you can expect a non-judgemental environment to increase your understanding of self with the belief that each participant has their own force for therapeutic change within themselves.

Because I am mindfulness trained, compassion and awareness are core to my work.
Finding a therapist who respects us is crucial. Having another person who understands us is a basic human need. At times what we do and think do not create a happy life. We may feel isolated, focus on the "negative" and find ourselves feeling wretched. We may turn to substance use or other behaviors to cope with discomfort. You and I will discuss your unique situation, what your behaviors and thoughts may be doing for you, and how they may be hindering your sense of wellbeing. We'll explore how to achieve comfort, acceptance and happiness. I look forward to nurturing your confidence, your strength and your wisdom.

"Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. It's not always comfortable, but it's never weakness."--Brene Brown. Hi, I'm Lydia and I utilize a solution focused, mindfulness based approach to aid clients in exploring their authentic selves and behavioral patterns. Like a Phoenix, I believe individuals have the ability to rise from the ashes as renewed, stronger versions of themselves. Whether those ashes are from broken relationships, perpetual marital problems, crippling anxiety, career dissatisfaction or the aftermath of trauma, they have the power to transform you.

Present or past experiences might keep us from living life in a way that feels physically healthy, connected to others, and with purpose. I utilize evidence based, mindfulness, and holistic approaches to working with clients and believe in tailoring services based on each client’s unique needs.
Simply put, being human is hard. When we experience loneliness, depression, fear, or disconnection, our relationships to others and to our true selves can become closed off, leaving us feeling isolated and in pain. In those moments of hardship there is immense power and courage in reaching out. Therapy can be a safe haven to process past experiences that have caused harm, address relationships that are in crisis, and find a way to reconcile loss. We can also use counseling to explore your values and how your life is lining up with those values, or missing the mark.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
