With the death of my infant son in 1982, I felt truly indoctrinated into the world of the dark-- and more equipped to help others with their pain and loss. A counselor for 40+ yrs, I help clients navigate into the dark, hidden parts of themselves--where much of their beauty, stories, secrets, "feared monsters", etc. lay buried & aching to be set free. Through a trusting counseling relationship, I help clients move from their head to their heart, remove masks & walls of defense no longer serving them, & open their heart to loving relationship with self and other.

I'm always striving to find a better way to counsel middle-aged women who are considering or are now serving as their parents' primary caregiver/carer—a role-reversal few are prepared for especially if there is a history of unreported sibling physical and sexual abuse. My lived experience as a primary and long-distance carer coupled with nearly 25 years of counseling caregivers across the lifespan provides the foundational knowledge, clinical experience, and compassion necessary to validate and empower women serving as caregivers for aging parents—often without the support needed to maintain their own mental health wellness.

As a therapist, I believe first and foremost in the healing and growth that can happen in relationship. My therapeutic approach is about meeting people where they are, and engaging each individual in a healing dialogue that is appropriate and specific to his or her life. I am a process oriented therapist. This means that I am primarily interested in understanding the process through which my clients respond to the world and how they make meaning out of their experiences. My goal is to facilitate increased awareness in my clients and improve agency, choice, and connection in their lives.

Trauma & abuse can cause us to feel isolated, out-of-control, and lost in our own lives. The resultant suffering & mental illnesses significantly disrupt our relationships, life satisfaction, and sense of self. These painful experiences can cause a disconnect between the four aspects of our being – mind, body, emotion, and spirit. Therapy offers a space in which you can understand this disconnection, re-story your experience, reintegrate these parts of yourself, and heal. In our work together, we will honor your experiences and help you find what you need to live a more authentic, empowered, and enriching life.

You have negative thoughts playing on repeat in your head. You’re overwhelmed and unhappy, not the person you used to be. You have so much on your to-do list and none of it seems to get done. You’ve lost yourself in the day to day grind of life. You’re wondering if things will always be like this, and if you’ll ever feel happy again. This doesn’t have to be your story.

Therapy is creative, gives us focus, loosens the grip of our problems, spins us around, and lifts us up. I have practiced psychology for about 30 years and presently work in Bellingham WA and Vancouver, BC. It's a privilege to work in both countries and have the same engaging relationships in both practices. I work eclectically, using methods that personally benefit whoever has come for therapy. Usually there is some aspect of Cognitive Behavioral therapy, because it is so helpful.

You deserve a space where every part of you belongs: where you feel unconditionally cared for and seen. I relate from a stance of non-judgmental acceptance with the goal of communicating that you make sense to me. In our work together, I’ll move towards you with curiosity, warmth, and acceptance as you feel into difficult emotions. At times we’ll play, be silly, and feel into and towards joy, excitement, and hope.

We all have complex stories, and often traumatic experiences in our past become so tangled up in our present day identity and rhythms that it's hard to move forward towards the people and things we care about most. The complexity of these difficult experiences can often have a negative impact on how we feel, live, and imagine our future. But therapy can offer a landing place to pause and reflect on our stories through a new and curious lens. Untangling the threads of your past and present life, and offering yourself empathy and kindness towards your future can provide a new way forward of empowerment, courage, and creativity.

It's so frustrating to want change and feel stuck. I want you to know there IS a way to change the things you want to change. There is a way to find yourself, trust yourself and care for yourself. Therapy is an opportunity to heal painful wounds and discover why you face the same challenges over and over. No matter the presenting concern: anxiety, depression, loss, or any life transition (major or minor), therapy can be an intensely rewarding and life altering process.

Accepting new clients for October 2024! My passion is in working with teens and young adults who have had to navigate struggles with anxiety, depression, family conflicts, parental divorce, loss, or healing from difficult relationships. The relationships we have throughout life can cause pain, but relationships also have the power to bring healing to those areas of our hearts and minds that have been damaged. This is why a therapeutic relationship is so impactful and why my approach to therapy is relational and collaborative.

NOTE: I am unable to accept new clients at this time. My goal as a therapist is to empower clients to overcome the challenges they face so they can thrive with their whole being. I am honored to accompany clients on their journey of growth. With an intersectional, anti-oppression lens, I work hard to support people in finding and living as their authentic selves in what is often a hostile cultural environment. My approach is warm, affirming, and relational.

Simply put, being human is hard. When we experience loneliness, depression, fear, or disconnection, our relationships to others and to our true selves can become closed off, leaving us feeling isolated and in pain. In those moments of hardship there is immense power and courage in reaching out. Therapy can be a safe haven to process past experiences that have caused harm, address relationships that are in crisis, and find a way to reconcile loss. We can also use counseling to explore your values and how your life is lining up with those values, or missing the mark.

How can I find a therapist in Lummi Island?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
