Often, creating healthy changes in relationships (couples, parent-child problems, co-worker or school friends) can play an important role in feeling better.
If you need support to change a troubled relationship, a job or living situation, I can help you. If you have dreams or plans that you want help bringing about I can help with motivation and structure. People who can take action to seek help for difficulties feel better about themselves and move in the direction of greater happiness. I like to employ wisdom from many sources; Research based positive psychology, cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices that restore emotional balance. I always seek to help you mobilize your own wisdom, sense of humor and courage.

The intention I have is to explore with you your desire to have a more healthy balance in the emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical aspects of your life. A central question that I keep in mind is: "how can I be helpful?" I encourage my clients to make overall goals for our counseling relationship as well as for each appointment. Your happiness and freedom is my goal. My hope is to create together an atmosphere of safety, respect and trust. My focus is to encourage my clients' exploration of their own personal power, wisdom and resources for understanding, healing and happiness.

Whether you're pushed beyond your breaking point by life stressors, managing difficult life transitions, or want support transforming a precious but challenging relationship into a more satisfying state, I look forward to walking that path with you. As a parent of three adult children, retired public school teacher, and Air Force brat, I sought therapy multiple times.
Sometimes the family and/or relationship process breaks down and people feel stuck. Relationships require us to be close in some ways and apart in other ways. This helps people be authentic with themselves and trusting of each other. With this trust and authenticity, people develop a new process for solving problems.

Many individuals seek counseling with me because they have had painful or traumatic experiences that interfere with their ability to live a satisfying life, one filled with meaningful relationships, the ability to experience joy, and the ability to manage life problems skillfully. They often feel stuck and, although they've tried hard, they continue to experience problems in relationships and often suffer from anxiety, depression and the effects of trauma. They want to move forward in their lives with hope, confidence and a sense of purpose.

I see teens, college students, adults, and parents: One of the hardest things as a parent is watching your child/teen suffer, whether it be from anxiety, OCD, depression, intense emotion, or social challenges. You want to support your child but feel at a loss. You may feel like the tools you've used for parenting and connecting with your child no longer work. Navigating the demands on your time and the emotions of your child feels impossible. You're suffering, too.

I also specialize in working with parents struggling with postpartum mood, grief and loss, and anyone interested in doing the inner work of knowing themselves and increasing their capacity for parenting.
I offer psychoanalysis/psychoanalytic therapy for overcoming anxiety, depression and emotional difficulties at all phases of life. For many, a starting place in therapy may be describing concrete symptoms of pain and illness in your body, and/or life stressors such as finances, relationships, responsibilities, social/political stress, disease/chronic conditions. These topical, real-world struggles are important entry points to your emotional world and your inner life.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
