What is it that we all have in common? Perhaps it is the desire to be happy, to find meaning in life or to have connections with others. Maybe we are searching for a feeling of calmness; or to be less overwhelmed. We all have our own personal struggles. I believe that my calming presence and acceptance of others helps clients feel comfortable and at ease. Finding the right therapist is key to your personal growth and emotional wellbeing.

My 34 years as a Sex Therapist in private practice has enabled me to work with a large variety of relationships, sexual problems & intimacy issues. I can offer a safe place to discuss, explore, and create solutions for whatever difficulty you're experiencing. Some Sex Therapy is short term (1-6 months) and often involves sexual education & permission to experience pleasure. Most Sex Therapy requires longer term therapy (1-2 years) because of relational dynamics, unhealthy beliefs about sexuality, anxiety, attachment issues from childhood, unresolved grief, trauma recovery, learning to identify & convey your sexual needs/wants.

Often in life we can get stuck and feel we have come to the end of ourselves and our capabilities. My goal is to be with you in this feeling and explore ways of getting you "unstuck."

Finding a therapist who respects us is crucial. Having another person who understands us is a basic human need. At times what we do and think do not create a happy life. We may feel isolated, focus on the "negative" and find ourselves feeling wretched. We may turn to substance use or other behaviors to cope with discomfort. You and I will discuss your unique situation, what your behaviors and thoughts may be doing for you, and how they may be hindering your sense of wellbeing. We'll explore how to achieve comfort, acceptance and happiness. I look forward to nurturing your confidence, your strength and your wisdom.

People who are deemed "unique" or "different" often see themselves as misunderstood. This can lead to many different issues such as isolation/loneliness, anxiety, depression, anger, stress, self-esteem issues, and many others. The teenage and young adult life stages can be especially tough.

You want to break free from painful relationship issues, self-defeating behaviors, and just feeling "stuck." The wonderful thing about therapy is that it provides you with a sense of relief - with hope that things CAN get better - by giving you a safe, respectful and non-judgmental space to speak freely about what is troubling you, or what is painful in your relationship. I work to create a safe, respectful and supportive environment that alleviates feelings of aloneness, and facilitates connection, awareness, healing and positive change.

I love working with the seekers - the ones who are feeling stuck in relationships or patterns, who have as deep a desire to understand as to move beyond. I am here for the psychologically curious - those who want insight and meaning while they strive to create a life that isn't painful all the time. Your pain needs to be tended to, but your capacity for joy and fun and play must simultaneously be cultivated. Life is complicated and problematic. This is an unremarkable truth, but sometimes we don't know what we don't know and we can get stuck in ways of being and relating that are not serving us or our partnerships.

Somehow, a longing, block, or pain led you to seek support. This could be ongoing self-doubt, a painful relationship pattern, past trauma, or so much is happening that life feels unmanageable. Together, we can unearth deeper understanding, change, and connection in your life. I often see relationships as especially powerful and challenging places for growth, so I offer support to reconnect with yourself or your partner, lower relationship anxiety, manage anger, rebuild trust and intimacy, heal after loss or a breakup, or untangle emotional patterns that keep you from fully living. You don't have to carry stress or anxiety alone.

I work with clients aged 13+ offering counseling for individuals, couples, and parents. Starting counseling can sometimes feel overwhelming and it takes a lot of courage to try something new. I view counseling as a collaborative process where we work together to explore and discover new ways to relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us. This starts with building a relationship of trust together. Listening to both the body and the mind, I take an interest in your interpersonal experiences believing we are often harmed, healed, and transformed through relationships.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
