I am passionate about helping you reach your potential. We accomplish this together through a psychoanalytic, interpersonal, mind-body-spirit integration that draws on your strengths and resources. I believe psychoanalysis and psychotherapy are not about fixing what is wrong, but about using what is working well for you and deepening your skills to increase your health, well-being, and overall freedom and flexibility. I care deeply about providing excellent care, and trying out new ways of relating and understanding yourself that will lead you to optimize your health and connections with others.

I primarily work from a relational psychodynamic perspective with a focus on interpersonal neurobiology and trauma-informed narrative and somatic therapy, as well as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.
Welcome to Hawthorn Trail Therapy; I'm so glad you're here. Human-ing is hard. As relational beings our hearts are broken by grief, loss, and harm, and we can become disconnected from ourselves, others, and the world. The hawthorn tree symbolizes courage and resilience, and is known for healing of the heart. It takes courage to seek therapy; it is a step on the path of compassionate awareness toward healing and home. For me, this path is one of developing safety and flexibility in the nervous system, moving out of bracing or collapse toward openness and connection, finding new ways of being that lead to freedom and flourishing.

While sessions are client-directed, my work with clients is rooted in the research on attachment and interpersonal neurobiology.
Individuals and couples crave a discerning witness to their experience. Someone to walk beside them who can hold what is true now, as well as hope for their future. Whether you are experiencing a difficult season, processing harm, curious about how your story has impacted your life, or simply needing a witness to your current struggle- I'd love to walk with you toward health and transformation. Often, couples seek help for communication issues in their relationships. Couples therapy addresses communication and how your individual stories impact your current relationship.

My work is informed by emotionally-focused therapy, compassion focused therapy, attachment theory, DBT, CBT, and interpersonal therapy.
Hi there! My strongest source of learning as a therapist has been getting to witness remarkable acts of courage by people facing seemingly insurmountable odds. It takes bravery to look within. I believe in helping people feel safe in their bodies again, safe to feel and express their emotions, and trust in their inner wisdom. I value truly understanding and connecting with those I see, and cultivating a space where you are free and comfortable to let your guard down. Whether you’re looking for concrete skills, wanting to dive deep into territory uncharted, or a bit of both, I will tailor my approach to meet your needs and goals.

I utilize an integrative approach to therapy, meaning that I combine different theories together to best suit your individual needs (including client-centered, narrative, DBT, CBT, psychodynamic, and solution-focused). I strongly believe in acceptance as an important component of change and will actively use techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in my work. An interpersonal process approach connects these different theories. I believe that if we can bring the problem into the room and experience it between us, we will have the best chance of working through it successfully.

I am accepting new clients. My clients are adults, children, and families. Adult clients are usually motivated to enter therapy by intrapersonal or interpersonal issues. Children often present internalized or externalized behavior problems and are brought into therapy by a concerned caregiver. Children may be depressed, withdrawn, angry, defiant, or underachieving. Therapy with children is very different from therapy with adults and requires an approach that is developmentally appropriate. I provide a confidential, safe place to explore psychodynamic issues and collaborate on approaches that feel right for you.

Accepting New Clients! - I work with individuals who struggle with relationships. This includes intimacy issues, problems with addiction, and unhealthy attachments. These issues can present themselves in romantic partnership but also peer, friend, and family relationships. Whether you struggle to maintain relationships, consistently find yourself in "toxic" or dysfunctional relationships, avoid closeness with avoidance behaviors/addictions, have patterns of self-abandonment, and/or feeling out of control, I might be able to help. Relationships are the most important thing in our lives as humans, it's difficult when we struggle.

I believe the that therapy is an opportunity to explore ones inner world, express feelings and concerns, heal from pain and suffering, and learn how to harness a more enriching and fulfilling life. I have worked with people from all backgrounds and walks of life and believe that we all have the possibility to improve our lives. Suffering is part of the shared human experience, but how we deal with our unique circumstances differentiates each one of us.

My approach to awakening is really quite simple: We engage in honest and direct dialogue about relationships, work, and your-self. During sessions you recognize core beliefs, thoughts, and feelings that create unsatisfying and difficult situations. In time you overcome anxiety, depression, and addictions that hinder a meaningful life. Additionally, you let go of long held resentments and regrets about your self, others, and the world. You become emotionally and mentally stable and discover practical solutions to everyday problems. With greater awareness, your energy is used for creativity. You are guided into a bright future!

Sometimes people show up for therapy with a defined idea of how they want their lives to be different and what goals need nourishment. Others simply know they are yearning for something 'more'...usually something that resembles peace and relief. No matter who you are, and what peace looks like to you, I'd love the honor of walking beside you on your path. My hope is that our time together will offer you new perspectives, renewed hope, healed wounds and invigorated joy. Whether you feel burdened by loss, change or the heaviness of this chapter of life, or are simply wanting connection, I'm here and thrilled to connect.

With compassion, an open heart, & inclusivity, Amy helps people expand their potential by creating a personal roadmap to their emotional health & wellbeing. Listening, acknowledgement, & building trust are key ingredients to her approach. Amy tunes into the client in each moment of every session to understand what they are experiencing to help them get their needs met. Attachment wounding can be a part of many people's childhoods and those experiences often present now. Many times, reparenting occurs through the therapy process and results in a corrective experience, bringing peacefulness & healing...to feel whole again.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
