It combines mindfulness, trauma-informed care, and an intentional rebalancing of your relationship with yourself and others to offer new ways of coping with life.
Stuck? I work with burned out marriages and couples on the verge of divorce. I have specific experience in sexual and anxiety-related issues, as well as diagnoses such as depression or ADHD. My typical clients seek relief from chronic conflict, including issues around sexual desire, arousal, and orgasm. In our work together, we will combine compassion with responsibility in finding new ways of relating that feel more free and full of joy. I also use discernment counseling to help couples considering divorce to find clarity on whether or not to begin couple therapy.

My work is always informed with mindfulness-based strategies and current research.
Serving people for 30 years in various settings (hospitaIs, schools, outpatient), I have learned what skills, attitudes, and attributes contribute to our sense of well-being and purpose and what boosts our confidence in handling life challenges. Youth as well as adults will understand the connection between feelings, behaviors and thoughts and modify those that don't work well for them. Whether a crisis, divorce, or relationship problem at home or school, difficulty being the parent or partner you wish, or self-sabotaging behaviors, I will help you harness these situations, and use them as springboards to becoming the person you most want to be.

The techniques I use in therapy are known as mindfulness-based and are called Mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Are you feeling on edge or restless often? Do you struggle with sleep and often feel fatigued or low energy during the day? Do you have a lot of muscle tension? I help people whose anxiety feels out of control. What if you could learn how to soothe yourself during distressing times and feel more in control of your emotions? Sometimes, the best solution for anxiety is to get help from a supportive and skilled therapist who knows how to guide you towards a calmer and more fulfilling life. I can help you focus on what you have control of during this uncertain time where so much is out of our control.

I enjoy working with CBT Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and Psychodynamic/Attachment.
I started in this work because I found that people would naturally open up to me. Therapy is an extension of the core belief that we as humans require connection and to be understood. As a therapist, you will find me to be engaged and interactive in session. I work with a variety of issues including depression, stress, work-life boundaries, numerous mental health diagnoses, but at the core, a positive connection is what I would hope that you'll gain within our time together. I do this work because each person has a story to tell and positive changes to make. I would love to sit with you to find the pathway that is right for you.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
