THRIVE! THRIVE COUNSELING & WELLNESS is a team of professional mental health providers dedicated to providing quality, effective, evidence-based counseling services in a respectful & culturally sensitive setting.
It is uncommon for people to willingly seek therapy. Misinformation, fear of stigma, prejudices abound. How unfortunate! By the time someone reaches out it is often because they are at a point of desperation; this is when the work begins. My philosophy & approach have been formed through many years of working as a clinical social worker. Though trained in the psychodynamic approach, I am eclectic in my approach & attuned to client needs. There is a saying that “only the brave go to therapy.” In reaching out to begin the therapy process, one is choosing to become conscious, to face what is not working in one’s life, & to change.

Communication struggles are very common. Are you clear on what you want? Are you really listening and being heard? Are you getting distracted in conversations by your reactions or you partner's reactions? Maybe you feel stuck in one or more areas of your life such as career or marriage. Do you need help sorting through what you really want. I work with clients struggling with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, work/life balance, parenting issues and relational distress. I also provide assistance with career transitioning.

I started in this work because I found that people would naturally open up to me. Therapy is an extension of the core belief that we as humans require connection and to be understood. As a therapist, you will find me to be engaged and interactive in session. I work with a variety of issues including depression, stress, work-life boundaries, numerous mental health diagnoses, but at the core, a positive connection is what I would hope that you'll gain within our time together. I do this work because each person has a story to tell and positive changes to make. I would love to sit with you to find the pathway that is right for you.

Understanding our emotions is a skill we all must learn to prevent relationship conflict and to promote inner peace. There are reasons we have the deep feelings we experience. We just need to understand why we have our feelings and what causes us to suffer so much from them. We suffer from our emotions because something else is going on inside of us that we may not understand. It does not need to be this way. You can learn to know yourself better, sooth your emotions and improve your relationships with partners, kids, co-workers and friends.

Trust, initially, is not earned, it is a risk. And so it means if you experience distrust upon our first encounter, well then you might just be a member of the human race. The safer someone is, the more likely they are to venture into trust, and so this is the primary specialization of therapy, to create a space that is safe. There are varying degrees of safety, but for the most part it comes when: you can be yourself, feel acceptance and positive regard, do not have to protect yourself from abusive behavior, experience confidentiality and kindness, a willingness by someone to help, and that the person before you is authentic.

When I was a girl there was no one to tell my deepest darkest secrets. My life's work is to be a trusted, healing person to those in pain. My therapy room is many things: a confessional, a delivery room, a crucible, a place of radical honesty with a whole lot of grace. Most of all it is a safe place for you to tell your story, to find strength and hope, to cry, and to heal. I embrace a holistic approach which considers your spirit, mind, body, & community.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
