I incorporate various theories and techniques, drawing from ecological systems, cognitive- behavioral, family systems, behavioral, and interpersonal frameworks.
My specialization involves working with children, adolescents, and their families with neurodiversed backgrounds on their journey toward hope, healing, and success. I provide an integrative approach coupled with a systems approach to partner with individuals, parents, and families, as well as diagnostic evaluations for a variety of mental health and developmental disorders. In addition, as a bilingual/bi-cultural (Mandarin-Chinese) clinical service provider, I understand the challenges and barriers that many immigrants face. I strive for providing culturally and linguistically sensitive services through a nonjudgmental lens.

You are worthy. You are capable. You are not broken. You can get through this. These are phrases that may be hard to believe for all of us at times due to various life experiences, transitions, or circumstances. While partnering with clients I use a mix of approaches, namely cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). The best fit therapy approach coupled with a strength-based perspective is used to support you in managing emotional distress, increasing self-respect, developing and maintaining new skill sets for coping, and navigating through life’s challenges.

Trust, initially, is not earned, it is a risk. And so it means if you experience distrust upon our first encounter, well then you might just be a member of the human race. The safer someone is, the more likely they are to venture into trust, and so this is the primary specialization of therapy, to create a space that is safe. There are varying degrees of safety, but for the most part it comes when: you can be yourself, feel acceptance and positive regard, do not have to protect yourself from abusive behavior, experience confidentiality and kindness, a willingness by someone to help, and that the person before you is authentic.

I use cognitive and behavioral strategies and a family systems perspective.
Serving people for 30 years in various settings (hospitaIs, schools, outpatient), I have learned what skills, attitudes, and attributes contribute to our sense of well-being and purpose and what boosts our confidence in handling life challenges. Youth as well as adults will understand the connection between feelings, behaviors and thoughts and modify those that don't work well for them. Whether a crisis, divorce, or relationship problem at home or school, difficulty being the parent or partner you wish, or self-sabotaging behaviors, I will help you harness these situations, and use them as springboards to becoming the person you most want to be.

I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, “talk therapy”, mindfulness, teaching coping techniques, client-centered therapy, as well as solution-focused and a strength-based perspective.
Life presents us with many challenges, but I strongly believe we all can navigate those challenges and overcome some of the depression, anxiety and other symptoms that life can cause. We will work together on understanding why you are feeling some of the emotions that you are experiencing. It can be helpful to understand how you fit into your interpersonal relationships including those with children, significant others, parents, work, etc. Understanding our roles and how we function in those roles can help to navigate change.

My goal is to help each of my clients experience self-acceptance, growth and healing in their particular context. I specialize in treating relationships and communication issues, anxiety, depression, grief, and emotional trauma, but welcome other areas of focus as well. My clients can expect to find a safe, judgement-free atmosphere where we can journey together toward lasting solutions. I take cues from my clients to determine how quickly we move forward and in which manner. Together, we can better understand the internal structures driving behavior, and chart a course toward growth and health.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
