I am interested in working with the whole person: emotional, physical, relational, mental, and spiritual.
I believe that we are all made for relationship with one another. Relationships are where we learn about love, comfort, hope, courage, joy, and empathy. They are also where we unfortunately learn about betrayal, fear, rejection, abandonment, abuse, and pain. These experiences and connections with others shape us into who we are. They are also the place where real change and healing can happen. I hope to come alongside you as an empathetic and trustworthy listener to help you make sense of unhealthy patterns that have kept you stuck and to provide real hope, growth, and change in the context of healthy relationship.

My approach to therapy is relational, client centered, and story driven.
I offer a warm, nonjudgmental environment, specializing in adult individual counseling. We all experience times where we get stuck, when we experience crisis, when we need help. I seek to collaborate with my clients in exploring what has happened in their life and how it affects what is currently happening; and together discover possible paths to greater self-awareness, and increased capacity to love, to work, and to live with wellness and fullness.

My approach is fundamentally relational and eclectic.
I work with individuals and couples (whether romantic, familial, or otherwise). I am passionate about healing relationships and trauma, fostering identity development, and supporting the myriad struggles arising in young adulthood, parenthood, and relationships. I believe that you are the expert on your own experience and hold within you the innate ability to heal and grow. I strive to create deep and lasting change in my clients, not simply symptom management or reduction. I welcome all clients regardless of sexual orientation, religion, etc. and am committed to facilitating your growth with compassion and without judgement.

Accepting new clients for October 2024! My passion is in working with teens and young adults who have had to navigate struggles with anxiety, depression, family conflicts, parental divorce, loss, or healing from difficult relationships. The relationships we have throughout life can cause pain, but relationships also have the power to bring healing to those areas of our hearts and minds that have been damaged. This is why a therapeutic relationship is so impactful and why my approach to therapy is relational and collaborative.

Changes and transitions are hard for all of us. Sometimes they can be great things like a new job, relationship or family member and other times they are hard changes like a death or the loss of something important to us. Other times they are the result of a trauma that may be recent or may have happened a while ago. I have several years of experience helping children, adolescents, adults, families and couples adapt creatively to these transitions in order to help them become the person they were created to be.

I believe therapy can serve as a potent and powerful conduit for healing, a place where you can say the things that you often don't, a cozy nest for sharing your most vulnerable self in search of hope and meaning, a platform for decision-making and action as you forge your way through change and growth. I believe it is our right and journey as humans to find and create a life of meaning. Our suffering is often the result of old behaviors, old traumas, old ways of thinking that we cling to in fear. And I believe that each individual is unique, with strengths, hopes, and challenges.

Every parent dreams of raising their children in ways that enable them to not only survive, but to thrive. As life unfolds, parents may encounter personal difficulties, or problems related to their children, that compromise their ability to provide consistent, responsive care. They may then be susceptible to feelings of overwhelm and discouragement. I offer families a compassionate, collaborative, strength-based therapeutic approach. I respectfully join with them in the belief that "We are in this together, and together, we will find our way through."

I enjoy my work as a psychotherapist even more today then I did when I started over 20 years ago. There is so much power and insight that comes from a truly authentic relationship between therapist and client. You, the client, can then take what is learned in the safety of the therapeutic relationship out into the world full of Other relationships and feel equipped to navigate them in a way that is aligned with who you are. Whether it's your self as a mother, daughter, brother, or son, there is meaning to unfold in everything you do.

Accepting New Clients: The most potent skill I want to offer to you is the ability to both witness and also experience fully whatever is arising within you with kindness and curiosity. Holding this paradox gently appears to be the way to move through difficulty with softness and be open to the wisdom of the challenge. I help adults as going through natural life transitions and finding themselves struggling to make meaning of their difficulties. Changes in our relationships, health and roles in family are some of the things that can be very challenging to accept and contend with, and I aspire to be a trusted guide in your journey.

I want your therapy experience to be a safe place to explore your life, your problems, and your dreams. Thoreau's quotation says it for me: "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could learn what it had to teach, and not when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." Your issues may be small or large. My commitment to you is to respect you as an individual and to really listen to you.

I believe that each of us has the capacity to become knowledgeable about what feels workable in day-to-day living and to uncover what personal values we would like to strive for in our life. I am drawn to working with folks who want to discover more about themselves (both strengths and areas of growth), their identity, their relationships, their role in the world, and how to lead a fulfilling, meaningful life. I value the opportunity to think together with clients about how therapy could be most helpful for them. I am well-suited to work with people who are looking for meaningful and measurable change in their life.

Adolescence can be an incredibly confusing, difficult, and demanding time in life. The pressures of school, peers, family, and building one’s identity, not to mention thinking about the future, can contribute to any number of mental health challenges. For kids, teens, and young adults these days, trying to address these challenges can be scary and uncomfortable. Being open to exploring these experiences takes courage and having the opportunity to do so in a safe, confidential, and open environment can foster change and personal growth.

The quality of our personal relationships is one of the most important things in life. Relationships of all types--romantic, parental, friends, co-workers, etc.-- have the capacity for both tremendous joy and tremendous aggravation and heartache. My speciality is working with couples to help improve romantic relationships. Humans were created to be in relationship with one another and whether I am working with an individual, a couple or a larger family unit, the client's ability to maintain healthy relationships with family and loved ones is a primary focus.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
