*Currently accepting new patients* Hi, there! I'm Ian. If you are feeling down, anxious, or stuck or are struggling in your relationships, I would like to help. I believe that meaningful personal connection—feeling understood, accepted, & loved—is at the heart of well-being, so my desire is to provide a genuine, warm, & safe presence in which my clients feel comfortable sharing their stories & exploring how their past has shaped them & their experience of the present. Though I use a psychodynamic approach, I tailor my approach to meet my clients' needs, integrating techniques from various approaches like CBT, gestalt, & mindfulness.

By integrating western (Cognitive Based Therapy) and eastern ( Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) modalities of treatment, I am here to assist you on your journey toward deeper self-awareness.
In an overly connected world, we sometimes just need to be heard. Meeting with someone who listens deeply can uncover the answers that live within our hearts. The therapeutic process allows you to navigate life's transitions (identity, relationships, career, relocation, retirement, grief and loss) with grace. In time, you can bring your whole self to all of your relationships (intimate, family, friends, colleagues). You can also pursue purposeful action in your education, career, community and spiritual life. Living is the process of enduring change. Building resilience allows us to be enriched by that ongoing change process.

I draw from a cognitive behavioral approach utilizing mindfulness and acceptance skills to address symptom management and treatment goals.
My name is Megan Dillon and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have been a practicing clinical social worker for 15 years supporting clients in jails, courtrooms, hospitals, primary care clinics and emergency rooms. The breadth of my practice has shown me that people want to experience peace, feel self-worth, and have meaningful connections. These desires are not unique but are the bricks that pave the pathway to healing and connecting with our best selves. Navigating the healing journey to true self-discovery is unique to each person. Thus, there is no one size fits all method of counseling.

I pull from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness based approaches, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
What a rough ride it's been over the last several years....a real doozy! There are so many people struggling with feelings of overwhelm, stress, anger/rage, grief, disillusion, lack of trust, lack of safety, hopelessness, loneliness, anxiety....you name it! We all feel it at times but sometimes it gets to be too much for us to handle on our own. We need to process our feelings, be heard, be seen, connect, and find our way through this maze of life. Does this sound like you? NO shame in that. We are human.

Our therapists implement a variety of techniques including DBT, CBT, somatic work, and mindfulness into client treatments.
The ancient Hawaiians call the soul ‘Uhane: at times when we are in pain or suffering we may feel like we are “ ‘uhane ‘ole” -which means without a soul. True peace and healing comes when the ‘uhane, the physical, spiritual and mental state, is healed. At ‘Uhane Counseling we strive to heal the soul in order to restore peace and tranquility to each client.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
