I specialize in relational psychotherapy which focuses on mutuality in the psychotheraputic relationship.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice for 40+ years, I provide relational psychotherapy for individuals and couples. In our initial meeting we identify the problem areas and conflicts causing psychological or emotional distress. Understanding the core issues will lead to a treatment approach, designed specifically for each client or couple. We utilize each persons strengths, coping skills, and life experience to reduce and manage anxiety, depression, self esteem issues and resolve internal or external conflicts. Effective psychotherapy can have a profound impact on mood, behavior and quality of life at all levels.

My style is warm, relational, transparent, engaged and supportive.
It is my deepest belief that we heal through the context of relationship. I am a relationally-oriented psychotherapist who believes that change happens in authentic encounters with another human being. I hold a radical openness to both myself and my clients and honor the courage that it takes to do therapeutic work. I aim to provide you a heart-centered and curious space of non-judgement for you to begin to uncover the emerging parts of yourself that are asking to be seen, known, and honored.

I am an Individual, Marriage/Couple, and Family therapist offering evidence-based tele-health "Zoom" counseling sessions for Washingtonians, or in-person on Orcas Island. My focus on resilience invites clients to utilize and develop their own internal strengths. As they begin to build skills, resolve conflict, improve communication, address challenges in their relationships, and reduce symptoms like anxiety and depression, many of my clients heal emotional trauma, relieve angst, find hope, and ultimately flourish.

Not accepting new clients
These include among others: Relational Psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, EMDR, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
I am a licensed clinical social worker with more than 30 years in private practice. Because the therapeutic relationship provides the primary component for healing, I seek to develop with my clients a safe relational space in which to explore the issues that bring them to therapy. The relationship serves not only as the backdrop, but also the vehicle for understanding one's internal world and learning new ways of thinking relating with others. Much of what troubles us stems not only from current external circumstances, but more importantly, from how we have learned to think about and cope with our experiences.

Being in relationship is complicated and healing can be deeply personal.  I aim to help couples and individuals communicate feelings with greater clarity so that they can deepen connection to themselves and others.  I provide therapy primarily for Queer and Trans people seeking liberation, with a strong anti-racist, anti-capitalist perspective along with my own lived experience.  With 15 years of licensed experience, I embody psychodynamic relational therapy by using a traditional talk therapy model.

Therapy works best when it incorporates relational connection as well as body-focused approaches.
The lingering effects of trauma can show up in many forms. Perhaps you are suffering from symptoms of perfectionism, burnout, anxiety or depression. Or maybe you find yourself repeatedly returning to unhealthy relationships with substances or people. Despite your very best efforts you find yourself reliving the same patterns over and over. Therapy can be an opportunity to provide intentional, focused attention to the parts of you that have been suffering so you can begin to make space for more authentic forms of connection, joy, and freedom.

Whether your goals are relational, occupational or personal, I work in partnership with you as I respect your ability to know yourself.
Therapy is something you have probably contemplated for awhile. It takes a lot of courage to work on tough issues that are making your life less fulfilling than you have envisioned. People seek counseling for different reasons. It can be something from your past that you feel it is time to work on, relationship disharmony, or help finding your direction and motivation to reach your goals. I work with you to overcome whatever blocks are in the way of living the life you want to live. The important thing is to bring more joy into your life.

I use a relational and trauma-informed approach, drawing upon evidence-based models such as attachment theory, emotion focused therapy, and family systems theory.
We all experience suffering, distress, or relational difficulty at different times in our lives. I work from a Christian worldview and believe that healing and growth take place within supportive relationships. Thus, I seek to offer you a trusted space to process the vulnerable parts of your story. We will collaboratively explore relationships and patterns that have influenced current behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. The goal will be to uncover the root causes of your concerns and address past wounds that keep you stuck and hold you back from the flourishing and wholeness you were created for.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
