I primarily use Internal Family System therapy with my clients, a non-pathologizing evidence-based model which helps a person access the life affirming qualities of their core self, and to bring that healing energy to the places inside that are tired and suffering. In addition, my work is informed by Somatic Experiencing, and I am trained in EMDR.

The intention I have is to explore with you your desire to have a more healthy balance in the emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical aspects of your life. A central question that I keep in mind is: "how can I be helpful?" I encourage my clients to make overall goals for our counseling relationship as well as for each appointment. Your happiness and freedom is my goal. My hope is to create together an atmosphere of safety, respect and trust. My focus is to encourage my clients' exploration of their own personal power, wisdom and resources for understanding, healing and happiness.

Life carries us in some ways, and in some ways we may carry a lot in our lives. Sometimes talking about our experiences can help with how we carry forward. If you would like to talk about what you notice, I would would love to hear and accompany you in conversation about transitions or trauma, loss, grief and walking on further in this life.

Please be you. Maybe you don't know who that it is. Or you do––and you're not a fan. Either way, you deserve to be the proud narrator of your own life story. As a gay man, I'm all too familiar with masking for social and romantic success. Low self-esteem, social anxiety, and addiction issues are common results when you dislike the sound of your voice. Together, we can bring your inner voice out. I like to use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in offering you tangible tools that act as rose-colored goggles. For who you are today. Let's work on characterization and plot. And let's give your life story a rewrite, if necessary.

Love. Joy. Ecstasy. Awe. In my 18 years of clinical experience, I’ve discovered that we each have far more capacity for these expansive feelings than we often realize. Whether you are contending with many challenges, or feel ready to fly through the stars, I can work with you collaboratively to shape a life that fulfills your highest dreams, and maybe even soars beyond them. I’m eager to share what I’ve learned about our abilities to break out of old patterns of pain, fear, and shame into fruitful creativity and communion with the most inspiring aspects of being alive.

Psychotherapy, as I practice it, is based on the observation that individuals are often unaware of the factors that determine their feelings and actions, and that this restricts their abilities to fully understand or work through the difficulties they are experiencing. Through our partnership, the individual becomes aware of the underlying sources of his or her difficulties which can remove symptoms, ease cramped and stuck life patterns and expand the freedom to work, love, form meaningful relationships and be happy and productive.

I help people struggling in their intimate relationships - to move from feeling isolated and alone, to finding the deep satisfaction of being known by the ones they love. If you feel trapped in a life that lacks connection to others, I can help you create relationships you want for yourself.

I believe that we are relational beings, and that health can be cultivated in intentional, honest, and reciprocal relationships that respect and reveal our inherent dignity. Because relationships with others and ourselves hold great promise and power, they can also be the focus of most of our pain as we move through life. The therapeutic relationship we build together acts as a staging ground and microcosm to help you renew the relationships you have with yourself and others in life.

You are just not the same anymore after it happened. You now struggle to sleep, find connection with others, or ultimately experience joy in your life. You are stressed and you wish you could stop thinking about the event(s) but somehow you cannot turn your thoughts away. Perhaps you find yourself avoiding certain topics, places, or people because they remind you too much of what happened. You long to be the person you once were and to have the life you once had. You are tired, worn out, and you need to somehow find a way forward in your life.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
