When something about you or your life is exceptional, your therapy needs to be different, too. People who are intellectually inclined, highly sensitive, intense, or gifted may find themselves out-of-synch with those around them. They may be unusually insightful, consistently two steps ahead of others, and find that their thoughts and feelings move quickly and intensely. They may find others put them on a pedestal for their success while simultaneously pathologizing their sensitivities, drive and inability to "fit the mold." This can be painful and create anxiety, depression or existential questioning.

I am a marriage and family therapist that helps individuals and couples navigate the challenges of modern life. We explore how roles in family, relational, social, and cultural networks influence the whole person. The client is the expert on their story and my role is to help translate that narrative through our combined knowledge. Clients I work with often feel they have all the outside elements for a happy life, but still struggle with stress, relational problems, self-esteem, and work issues. Something is missing or preventing fulfillment and it is our collaborative efforts that help us discover and remove those barriers.

Not accepting new clients
I specialize in supporting individuals and families with health issues: serious diagnoses, chronic illness, disability, end-of-life issues; exploring coping strategies, quality of life issues, and anxiety and depression resulting from or causing impaired health.
I am currently unable to accept new clients. Stress is a normal part of life, but when we don't feel we have the resources to handle it, it can become distress . Sometimes we just need someone to walk alongside us through a rough patch, or face a major change or unexpected circumstances that surprise and overwhelm us. Other times, the burden of anxiety or depression can be too much to carry alone. Hope and healing is possible in a safe, accepting environment. I work with individuals, couples and families to resolve conflict, address boundaries and identity issues, navigate life transitions, and restore relationships.

Chronic pain is treated with problem-solving therapy and hypnosis.
I work best with people who are looking for help with their issues and are willing to try new approaches to the way they go through life. People who realize that most of the work in psychotherapy is done outside of the office do well with me. I personalize treatment to the individual, and use proven techniques along with "homework assignments" where appropriate, to facilitate long lasting change and improvement in quality of life.

Dr. Taylor has significant experience working with individuals with addiction, trauma, infidelity, and chronic pain or illness impacting sexuality. She understands how one’s life can change in the blink of an eye, and how goals and values can shift when life does. It is during these times that individuals, couples, and/or families, can experience varying degrees of difficultly with the transition. How an individual responds is neither right nor wrong, because everyone has their own process and journey in life.

Are you at a crossroads in life? I support adults as they work through present struggles and past painful experiences like divorce, career issues, chronic pain, grief, parenting concerns, and other stressors. Another focus area of my practice is on processing religious abuse, deconstruction, and spiritual exploration. It is common to experience anxiety, depression, low self esteem, and a host of other symptoms in response to traumatic experiences, but healing is possible no matter what you are facing.

I often work with trauma, PTSD, relational issues, depression, anxiety, illness/caregiving, and work/life balance and happiness.
I support individuals and couples navigating life changes. Therapy can help shift something within our control or change how we relate to things outside our control. This might look like understanding why we're repeating patterns and what we can do to change them or developing healthy strategies and boundaries to deal with people, places, and things we can't change. We'll work to identify the patterns of emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships currently showing up in your life, and how you want to adjust them to live a life more in alignment with what you truly value.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
