I work with individuals who are dealing with depression, anxiety, stress, and trauma.
The human experience can be a difficult one. Learning to deal with the ins and outs of our daily lives and the world around us can be daunting. People often struggle getting past their own barriers to see their personal strengths and potential for success in all aspects of their lives. By participating in therapy, individuals can find a safe place to learn and grow by discussing their emotions and experiences. Working on learning skills can improve natural coping mechanisms and reduce distress caused by mental health disorders. I received my Masters in Social Work from EWU and have been a mental health counselor for over 2 years.

Do you find yourself struggling with past memories, fear about the future, difficulty regulating emotions, or feeling overall unsatisfied with your life? With a specialization in trauma I can help you navigate these challenges by identifying how your past continues to impact your present and how unhelpful patterns continue to prevent you from moving forward.
We all have moments in life where the weight of our struggles feels too much to handle. If you are reading this, you have likely felt the exhaustion and heartache life can bring. The good news is you don’t have to carry this weight on your own. I work to create a safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate environment where you can feel wholly accepted and cared for just as you are. Together, we will go on a journey of self-exploration where we identify and examine the hurts that have led you to where you are today. It is in this work together that true healing and peace can be found.

Everyone needs a safe place to express their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears. Sometimes that means seeking out a professional. Someone who can listen, support, and assist in helping to overcome obstacles or reduce emotional pain. This is my ultimate goal for everyone with whom I work. I have been working in the field of counseling for 18 years and have experience working with a wide variety of individuals. Some need help adjusting to a life change. Others have experienced significant trauma or struggle with suicidal thoughts. Mostly, I am here to meet you where you are at and to help you reach your goals.

I am trained in EMDR and I have experience with trauma, anxiety, depression, familial issues, relationships, interpersonal relatedness, sexual abuse, cult and religious trauma, feelings of loneliness, and creative blocks.
Sometimes things happen in life that make it difficult to cope. Everyone deserves happiness and to overcome whatever it is that has made healing difficult. I have a passion for working with people who want to feel better and don't know how. I utilize EMDR as a modality to identify negative core beliefs, bolster coping, and process memories to help develop a framework for healing. I will help identify what the issues are and provide the tools to move forward using your strengths and resilience.

Hello, my name is Benjamin Menard. I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker beginning my private practice in Spokane. My specialty is non-directive play therapy for children ages 4 – 12 and talk therapy from ages 13 - and up. Thirty two years ago, when I began to practice, I was fascinated by the resiliency of people individually, and their family systems. I have worked with people from many different backgrounds, with many different challenges. My approach to therapy is down-to-earth and uncomplicated. Most often I lean heavily into Trust Based Relational Interventions (TBRI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. I look at challenges from several viewpoints and work with the client to help them identify their strengths within to address their own unique concerns.

If you have a desire to make changes, but aren't sure where to start or don’t feel like you can do it alone, therapy can help! Stressors like communication issues or strife with your partner or family, anxiety or conflict at work or church, and past abuse or other traumatic experiences can all weaken the body's ability to be as effective through life. Having an intentional time each week to focus on yourself and your connections and stressors is what therapy can offer. It's a time to pause, reflect, and dive deeper into what's weighing you down and shore up what matters most to you.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
