If what you are doing with your life and relationships only results in a mess, you can learn to change all that to your satisfaction. I have the skills and experience to teach and support you in the process. The process involves learning who you are (how you feel, what your needs are), how to expose and change self beliefs that are misdirecting your life, how to put words to it all, and finally learn how to express yourself in a meaningful, constructive way to others. Clients tell me how much they appreciate their new self-understanding and relationship skills.

I love working with a diversity of populations. My ideal client has some insight into what he/she is struggling with and a willingness to open up about their pain. I understand that trusting a therapist can be frighting, especially for those who have a history of painful relationships. I am client centered and will work at your pace with the understanding that as we build trust I will start to challenge thoughts and behaviors that are keeping you from meeting your goals.

As a dual diagnosis/co-occurring psychotherapist, (licensed mental health counselor and licensed substance use disorder professional) my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges. By applying specific therapeutic approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life and incorporate healthy coping skills.

I have over twenty two years experience working with adults, adolescents, and families in behavioral and community mental health. However, the last thirteen years have been the most gratifying as I have had the privilege to practice directly as a mental health therapist. My approach focuses on working collaboratively with clients to find the change, growth, peace of mind, and general sense of well being they seek, as well as to help work through the challenges that life can present.

“If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can’t survive.” - Brene Brown. One of my favorite things I get to do as a therapist is meet a variety of people and help them live authentically. Sex and sexuality are often associated with shame. If you find yourself navigating these feelings, you’re not alone. Sexual dysfunction is a common problem among all genders and sexualities.

Since 1983, in a variety of settings, I have enjoyed working with diverse individuals and couples to overcome their personal, relational, emotional and perceptual problems and build on their strengths for a new and brighter future. Whether their problem is a mood disorder or a relational issue, conflict management or PTSD, compulsive eating or a communication problem, I never tire watching people emerge and transform. Believers and non-believers, almost-believers and other-believers, almost everyone agrees that personal problems arise because of the disconnection we all feel that resides in this world. So what is the solution?

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
