Congratulations! You are taking the first step toward your journey of healing! I can only imagine that thoughts and feelings that have led to this choice. The challenges you face can seem overwhelming and hopeless. We face situations that seem out of control and hopeless, yet helping you identify your needs and working with you to develop healthy coping skills can help give you security you are looking for. Many times you may be afraid to share your thoughts and feeling for fear of being judged. No matter the choices you've made, we can work together to help you heal.

I provide therapy not only because I strive to support others, but because I believe therapy works. I admire the vulnerability and strength that go into the healing process. I know you have within you what it takes to heal, but that doesn't mean you have to do it alone. You deserve to feel safe enough in both your mind and body to fully engage in life. My clients are seeking out therapy for relief from their complex trauma, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and/or anger. I work with anyone ages 14 and up.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Carl Rogers once said, “It is only when I accept myself exactly as I am that I begin to change.” For twelve years I've helped individuals work through anxiety, depression, relationship stress and the “normal” transitions of life. I help my clients stop fighting their emotions and accept the job they have to do. I help peel away beliefs like, “I’m not enough, I can’t do it.” I help rebuild strong internal foundations that tend to mental health, relationships and engagement with the world. With individuals, I specialize in treating workplace traumatic stress for healthcare providers.

Maybe you've been hearing about stepping into "main-character energy" or becoming the hero/heroine of your own story. A voice nags, quietly but persistently, that life is passing you by or reminds you that you really "should" do that thing you've been meaning to do. You long to be in alignment with your core values and feel proud of the person your unique life's journey has shaped you into. Perhaps you'd simply like to be able to identify what your dream life looks like. Maybe the idea of becoming more attached to your growth than your suffering intrigues you, you're just not sure how one makes that shift. What's an author to do?

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
