When your brooding, moody teen just won't listen and your partner isn't much help either, what's a stressed out, overwhelmed parent like you to do? Pick up the phone and give me a call. Why? Because even though arguments and communication conflicts can make it feel like your family members are from an entirely different planet, there really are some secrets to bring peace, calm, and order to the chaos. I help people with depression who want to feel better in life. I help parents needing parenting skills. I help couples needing to find better ways of communication. I work with military, first responders and veterans to cope with life

It often starts with the unexpected. Unexpected news, unanticipated turns, unforeseen circumstances, and sometimes the unimaginable. It is at these times we can often feel powerless, afraid, confused, and uncertain. Change for some can be unwelcomed and for other’s change doesn’t seem to come soon enough. We cannot always choose what we go through, but we can choose how we go through it. Many seek therapy due to hard-fought battles with a variety of life issues, such as depression, trauma, anxiety, relationship problems, parenting challenges, and experiences from the past that keep them from moving forward.

I believe, and the research clearly indicates, that the bond you form with your therapist is the biggest predictor of positive outcomes. I therefore place a high emphasis on establishing a warm, safe environment for our relationship to grow. I like to understand therapy as a shared endeavor at pattern finding. If we can understand the personal and interpersonal patterns that contribute to your difficulties, we can address the root causes of those challenges and open up new ways of experiencing yourself and others.

I view therapy as a means to acquire a well-equipped toolbox of positive and healthy life skills. These skills will help the client recognize, understand, and utilize their internal power for overcoming life's many external forces that may be causing distress or dysfunction in their life. My job as a therapist is to maintain a safe, caring, and confidential environment for my clients as they embark on that journey.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?

The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?

Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?

Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?

ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
