In person sessions. Email for a quick response. "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated." ---Maya Angelou. We all experience difficulties. When life gets complicated, when we are overwhelmed and just need some guidance to navigate our day, when we need to feel more in control, to feel comfortable and safe, counseling is helpful. Every one of us could use someone to listen, an opportunity to speak freely and be supported. This is my focus and passion. I have extensive experience working with youth and adults who are experiencing sadness, worry, anger, grief, and trauma.

We base our evaluations on the individual. A specific diagnosis along with treatment recommendations is offered. Encountering issues with alcohol or other drugs does not necessarily warrant a diagnosis for chemical dependency. While in the process of recovery we help you determine your life goals and ambitions. It is easy to get "clean and sober" and it is difficult to stay "clean and sober". That's why you can count on us to walk with you on the journey of maintaining a life of sobriety and freedom.

I am a practicing licensed marriage and family therapist. For the past 10 years I have worked in the crisis mental healthcare system. There I encountered clients at some of the worst times in their lives. I created a space and container for them to be in the moment. To be messy, to be where they were at that stage of discomfort, and be able to sit with that. I worked with some of the world's most marginalized and disenfranchised populations who were in a constant struggle of survival with a system that was deliberately built against them.

I am accepting new clients! I specialize in supporting new and expectant parents. I have expertise in the treatment of perinatal mood disorders and trauma. I know firsthand that there is no job more challenging—or more sacred—than that of a parent. As parents we often feel guilt, disappointment, grief, depression, anxiety, overwhelm, or self-doubt. Each individual faces challenges as they learn to navigate life and find their place in the world. At times, these obstacles may feel like Mt. Everest and impossible to overcome. Issues may arise such as trouble with concentrating, lack of motivation, perfectionism, social issues, academic struggles, anxiety, depression, and sometimes addiction. All of which may be overwhelming to a person. People need a "neutral party," someone they can talk to, in confidence, to discuss and work through issues. Having a therapists offers a safe place to share, feel accepted, and understood.

Life Guide Northwest was founded in 2010 in Portland Oregon by my late father Stevie B. Hoggans. His sole purpose in establishing Life Guide Northwest was to create a treatment agency to support the specific needs of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) community. This level of support was not available in his community, which dealt with socio-economic challenges which manifested into issues such as behavioral health conditions, crime, substance abuse, poverty, and homelessness. Like my father, I am passionate about helping ALL individuals who are struggling to navigate interpersonal challenges.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
