I specialize in trauma-informed, postmodern, and experiential therapy.
In times that can seem harsh and unfair, it can be hard to find a way forward. I believe that our problems are not “all in your head.” There are real reasons we feel the way we feel, and they deserve to be heard and honored. Systemic oppression, world events, and childhood experiences have a real effect on us. If the world has ever told you who you are is “not okay”, it may feel dangerous just to exist in certain spaces, let alone to act on your feelings and desires. I hope our work will help you better understand how to unite your Self, your values, and your circumstances to build the life you want to live.

I practice emotionally focused and experiential therapy to help individuals, couples and families build self-esteem, connection and communicate more effectively.
Hurts from past experiences can create emotional and mental roadblocks that can keep us from achieving the quality of life and relationships we long for. If the problems in your life are causing you to feel anxious, stuck or alone there is hope. Therapy can offer the support and tools to help you heal, learn and grow so you can overcome the challenges in your life. I believe that developing healthy self-esteem and secure relationship bonds are key to emotional and mental well-being. I work with teens, couples and adults to build on their strengths and improve their relationship with self and others.

Welcome, I'm truly grateful you're here. Choosing to engage in therapy shows courage, care and curiosity. Therapy is about exploring the questions that keep you up at night: What do I want? What am I doing with my life? How do I make friends? Will I ever feel good enough? Why am I so uneasy at school? Why is parenting so difficult? How can we make this relationship work?

Something does not feel right, you are having a hard time. You’re stuck, conflicted, and can't decide what to do. Or maybe a part of you thinks one way and another part feels differently. You feel disconnected and alone. Others have tried to help, but you feel like they don't really get you and want you to "just get over it". Shame and frustration set in. Maybe you have a sense that some trauma from your past is blocking you from living the life that you want. You want to get unstuck, have a clear roadmap to know what to do next and how to go about healing. You want to experience real joy and connection again.

Hello, my name is Stephen. Recognizing how important, yet difficult, it can be to cultivate and work through meaningful relationships in our lives, my goal is to help others experience relationally enriching lives. Thinking about how important my relationships are to my own life and well-being, I can’t help but feel for those who are really struggling through the most important relationships in theirs. I’m reminded especially of those clients I've worked with who've felt alone and unloved due to the lack of connection in their own lives.

Do you desire a more enjoyable and fulfilling life? Do you ever wish you could find more support and intimacy in your relationships? You may have many things people consider a part of a good life, such as work, family, friends, and various material possessions, and yet you still feel empty and discontented. Furthermore, unwelcomed emotional distress and mood fluctuations may have been bothering you for some time. You have noticed difficulty controlling your worrying thoughts and anxious feelings. Quite often, fatigue and lack of motivation stops you from engaging in activities you used to love. And you wonder what's wrong?

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
