I am passionate about working with Asian Americans and the Chinese population. I have a lot of experience in helping international students and employees navigate life transitions and challenges. My clinical areas of specialty include personal growth and development, anxiety and depression, interpersonal problems, grief and loss issues, trauma, and stress-related problems. I believe the difficulties serve a purpose: to provide us the chance to reveal authenticity and completeness in our life. Life seems to be falling apart when you focus on the broken pieces. I will help you see how they will come together to form the whole.

All of us come up with ways to manage life's stresses. Each one of these strategies was born out of a need to protect ourselves - to survive. Yet sometimes, the methods we relied on to help us out of difficult situations end up being the very source of more difficulties. Perhaps you isolate yourself when relationships get hard and leave loved ones feeling abandoned; perhaps the only way you know how to love pushes your child further away; and perhaps you're an achiever who, when the lights are dimmed and applause is gone, feels endlessly empty and small. Your own stuff is getting in the way of you being who you want to be.

Seeking Therapy is a courageous act of self-love; however, it can feel scary at first, but I want you to know that you made the right decision. A safe therapeutic environment would promote growth, healing, and stability. Therapy provides a haven for you to discuss things that you are currently struggling with or have experienced in the past and have not been able to heal from the situation completely. I have experience assisting individuals and couples in finding effective coping strategies to help manage life and relationship challenges.

It can feel daunting to take the first step. You may feel weighed down by your past or feel like a part of you inside has been missing for some time. You may have identified that you wish to restart or continue the journey you are on. Wherever you are on your individual path, opening up to a professional can oftentimes be intimidating and a little scary. The wonderful part is that I am human too. Through personal experience, I understand what courage it takes to ask for support. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process built on earned trust and safety. I also believe that YOU have essential worth and wholeheartedness.

Immigration evaluations and teen support are my passions. I enjoy working with people of all races, ethnicities and cultures, and I am passionate in advocating for social justice issues. I believe that when transgressions occur and cause trauma, one should have a place to find safety. I myself have Dyslexia and HSP (Highly Sensitive Personality), which have presented challenges in my life, but I have learned to use them as the gifts that they are. For example, being highly sensitive enables me to be an excellent empathetic listener, and my dyslexia sometimes allows me to see possibilities for growth that others might not.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
