The human condition is stressful for everyone right now. Healthcare providers, LGBTQ2SIA + and those with chronic pain/medical illness are feeling it more than ever. Depression, anxiety and trauma responses can be overlooked/minimized. What you are experiencing is real and you deserve the time, space and support to explore this. Are your thoughts, feelings and behaviors getting in the way of your relationships/work/goals/well-being? Are you taking better care of others than you are of yourself? Is it time to move beyond surviving and begin thriving? If so, perhaps it's time to reach out for a helping hand. All are welcome here.

I am a proud professional counselor. In the last ten years of my career I have worked with university students and individuals with severe persistent mental illness. I was drawn to working in higher education because university students are often times ready to change and dive into working on growing as people and developing new patterns of behavior. I enjoy helping anyone willing to take a few moments to try an experiment with their thoughts, or try something new. It may be a bit anxiety provoking at times but it helps us all to grow and change. I aspire to be an expert in helping clients find relief from their issues.

I specialize in working with the exploration of self, developmental and life transitions, adolescent/young adult development, and chronic illness/disability.
Being true to yourself in a changing world can be challenging. Therapy can help you to clarify who you are, what you believe, and how to get on the path you want to take. Counseling is an investment in yourself and a chance to be intentional with the life you have ahead. Life’s transitions and obstacles, whether they be internal, external, or systemic, can be made easier with some assistance. Holding space, bearing witness, identifying patterns, and highlighting your strengths: my role adjusts to your needs. My clients are able to share their whole selves as they work towards becoming their best selves.

I know first hand that healing from trauma and "the dark nights of the soul" are not only possible, but hold within them a gateway to more love and joy. No one goes through life without pain. Yet how we address our pain will make all the difference in how deeply we suffer, how resilient we are and how much we grow from these experiences. I will infuse our collaboration with compassion, acceptance, curiosity, and humor--focusing on your strengths.

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
