It is hard for many of us to reach out to someone for help. It may be embarrassment, or being unsure how therapy would help heal you. Our journey together will be a compassionate, nonjudgemental classroom where you will learn more of your pure self and its ability to heal. It is important that we both see clearly in our work together: "There’s one skill at the center of any healthy family, company, classroom, community, university or nation — the ability to see someone else deeply, to know another person profoundly, to make them feel heard and understood.” David Brooks, New York Times

My clients come from a variety of backgrounds and ages seeking healing and understanding of their relationships and meaning in life. Some suffer from substance addiction, others from work stress, and many from wounded relationships in their family. I'm Currently Accepting New Clients! Are you struggling with the transition of becoming a mom while also navigating your relationships, a work life balance, and/ or taking time for yourself? Or maybe you're going through another big life transition (divorce, job change, big move, etc.) and you're unable to cope with it all on your own. We live in a fast paced world where it is easy to become stressed out and overwhelmed and we no longer have the communal support of our family, neighbors, and friends, so our symptoms have only intensified. But you are not alone and transformation is possible. The life you want is possible!

My focus in the therapeutic relationship is to work along side someone who wants to examine the many parts of their life in every aspect from their thoughts, feelings, family dynamics, current relationships, and where they would like to be headed. We often find ourselves attached to one identity in an attempt to preserve the expectations of others, losing sight of the other complexities that make up our whole self. With deep desires to meet the needs of others, whether family, school, work, or in relationships, we forget to establish and nourish our own needs.

I agree that finding a therapist that fits the individual's exact need is often a challenge. I offer a supportive but pragmatic approach to therapy that relies primarily on cognitive principles. I rely on nearly 30 years experience in the mental health field and bring a breadth of knowledge spanning a wide array of mental and emotional difficulties.

I use Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
My clients often feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, have high expectations, and don’t want to burden others. As a result, they sometimes have a hard time not only accepting help but asking for help too. I specialize in stress management, anxiety, moderate/mild depression and relationships. I do a lot of work around negative self talk, self-esteem/worth, assertiveness, self care and boundary setting. For individuals, I start by completing a biopsychosocial assessment, so I can learn about you on multiple levels and better understand your subjective experience. We then move on to setting treatment goals and begin therapy.

Using the Gottman Method, I work with couples who are striving to rebuild their connection, improve their communication, and manage conflict.
Are you experiencing loss of emotional connection in your relationship? Is that lack of connection leading to loss of interest in physical intimacy? Or, perhaps communication with your partner feels like you are gridlocked in the same argument over and over? Using The Gottman Method, I work with couples who are striving to rebuild their connection, improve their communication, and manage conflict. In addition, I have experience supporting individuals and couples with a wide range of issues, such as low desire, kink, LGBTQIA+, non-monogamy, and sexual dysfunction.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
