Are you unhappy in your closest relationship? Are you stuck in a pattern of disconnection? Has one of you had an affair? These are the signs of distress in a relationship: poor communication, distance and/or withdrawing, critcizing/blaming, lack of intimacy or sexual contact, inability to resolve conflict. If you are experiencing any of these - its important to get help asap. I help people create intimate, secure, lasting relationships . Other specialties also include working with those who suffer from the after effects of abuse and trauma, and those who are experiencing depression, anxiety or stressful changes in their lives.

I take a collaborative, active approach to individual & relationship therapy to help clients become unstuck from ruts, break old unhealthy patterns, communicate more effectively, resolve relationship crises, and learn more about themselves as partners and as people. Clients come to me for therapy in all states: fine-tuning an otherwise happy union, distraught after trust has been broken, considering a break-up, recovering from an affair, or just wanting to learn new relationship skills.

Relationships are the foundation of well being. Perhaps you are worried about your marriage, facing a divorce or the loss of a job, the breakup of a family business, adult children who blame you for their struggles or your struggle to find a love match or the perfect job. How do I find my way through this?

I have extensive training in trauma-informed care, co-dependency, and how relationships both im pact and are impacted by the individual.
Oftentimes clients come to therapy stuck in patterns that are not serving them well, and they do not understand how they ended up where they are. My goal in working with clients is to help them know, understand, and have compassion for themselves, and in the case of couples and families, for each other as well. I provide a safe and nurturing environment where clients are free to express their thoughts and feelings, and I work to help them make sense of it all. My goal is to meet clients where they are, and give them the tools to get to where they want to be emotionally and psychologically.

I am committed to effect change through the process of psychotherapy using a direct, reality based approach. Although I draw from many different therapeutic modalities, my theoretical orientation is consistent with cognitive-behavioral theories. I believe social learning, modeling, and reinforcement all play a significant role in how ones personality developes, how one thinks, behaves, & feels as they get older. I believe refuting negative and irrational thinking will likely increase healthy feelings and behaviors that will greatly im pact ones overall wellbeing. I believe that effective communication is the key to building healthy relationships, rebuilding severed relationships, & strengthening present ones.

I am committed to helping those who seek greater understanding, connection, and stability in relationships with self and others. Specialty areas include depression, anxiety, attachment, young adult development, leadership, and BPD spectrum. I love applying advances in research to how I think about my patients' care. My work is informed by relational psychodynamic and cognitive/behavioral approaches (including ACT, DBT, CBT), and by my background in yoga, somatics, and mindfulness. Above all, I think my job is to listen really well, while bringing curiosity, challenge, and kindness toward your unique human experience.

Psychobiological Approach Couple Therapy

How does the psychobiological approach to couples therapy work?

The psychobiological approach to couples therapy combines research in three domains—attachment theory, developmental neuroscience, and arousal regulation—to address relationship challenges. Couples learn about their underlying emotional and physiological responses to different situations so as to identify these responses and then shift them with the help of practice exercises in sessions.

Is the psychobiological approach to couples therapy evidence-based?

While some research has been conducted by its creator, there is little peer-reviewed research to support the efficacy of the psychobiological approach to couples therapy. It’s not as evidence-based as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, or acceptance and commitment therapy.

How long does the psychobiological approach to couples therapy last?

The psychobiological approach to couples therapy is a relatively short-term therapy, typically less than 12 sessions. However, individual sessions can be much longer. A typical couples therapy session lasts 45 minutes, while these sessions often last for two to three hours, and sometimes three to six hours. Some couples may opt to attend two or three sessions per week.

What are the limitations of the psychobiological approach to couples therapy?

A limitation of the psychobiological approach to couples therapy is that the evidence is much more limited than it is for other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, or acceptance and commitment therapy. Additionally, the psychobiological approach to couples therapy only applies to couples in relationships, so keep in mind that it cannot treat mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.
