There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, so I strive to find the right tools and resources to create our path forward. Through collaboration, we will set priorities and goals for our work together.

Ideally, I’m looking to connect with a client’s desire to move forward and make change in life and to progress through challenges, as well as through traumas. With older teenagers, adults and parents dialogue is the primary foundation to build a therapeutic relationship. With children, it is my experience being more playful and more body-based is a fun and effective therapeutic relationship.

I understand that reaching out to a therapist can feel very challenging and that you may have many questions.
Choosing a therapist for yourself or loved one can be a difficult task. A true "Master" of the healing arts is one who has spent years learning, practicing, and refining their skills as a healer. Individuals, couples and families first entering into the therapeutic relationship often feel overwhelmed, confused, anxious and vulnerable. They need to feel safe by knowing that they are truly being heard and respected. They also need to trust that their therapist has sufficient experience to patiently guide them thru the process of self discovery on their path to wellness and feeling whole, perhaps for the first time in their life.

In private practice since 2006, I continue to feel honored to get to know my clients. My hope with each person is that we will create a space together in which a unique healing relationship may unfold. To facilitate that space, I tend to focus on your feelings and how they are held in the body; on past experiences and how they relate to current feelings and relational patterns; on how relational patterns may be being repeated within the therapy; on the richness of your internal world (that emerges, for example, in dreams, daydreams, artwork, etc.); and on awareness itself, within which all of the above happens.

The most critical factor for successful therapy, whether you're a man or a wo man, is to connect with a robust and confident therapist who resonates with you.
Have "woke therapists" soured you on counseling? Have you been unable to find an energetic and engaging therapist that fits your personality and value system? Whether you're dealing with anxiety, struggling to get out of bed, divorce, anger, or simply trying to get through each day, I will change your perception of what you think therapy is like in today's socially polarized climate. For both men and wo men, direct and honest talk is always the best (often the fastest) way to wellness. With a practical, common-sense approach, I will provide the help you need to get back on track. Call for a free 15 minute consultation!

Monday Tuesday daytime appointments available. I live and work in northern Vermont, and enjoy working in person with those right here in my community. The foundation of my therapeutic approach is simple; the relationship between counselor and patient is the most important consideration for positive change. I have over eight years of experience treating anxiety, depression, trauma, loss, life changes and more. My approach is strengths based, helping people keep sight of their inherent strengths while working through challenges. I enjoy incorporating drumming, music, and humor in therapy. I work with adults age 21 and up.

It is wonderful to see the relief on couple's faces when they realize it is going to be much easier than they thought, more ro mance is going to return to their relationship, and sex will be better!.
I like to start by building trust and finding out what goals you want to set for yourself. A safe, encouraging atmosphere with no authoritarian or shaming attitudes is important. Humor is useful with couples, families or teens. Role-plays are a fun way to practice new relationship skills.

For the past nine years, I have primarily assisted youth, ages 5-25, experience therapy for the first time as fun and interesting. I encourage and motivate clients to explore thoughts, feelings and behaviors that may not be helping them and believe that everyone has the potential for success and happiness in all areas of their lives. As a result, I help clients identify goals for health, relationships, work, and school in the short and long term.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
