I am professionally trained and experienced in a number of proven modalities which target this, including EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, and Internal Family Systems.
I specialize in healing from deeply-rooted trauma. If you've been in therapy before and still struggle with problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors which interfere in day-to-day life, a more comprehensive approach may help. Research has shown that present day mental health challenges which originate from earlier life experiences often require intervention with the parts of our system which hold verbal and pre-verbal conditioning. Using both cognitive (brain-focused) AND somatic (body-focused) interventions ensures that all parts of our body are integrated into the healing process.

One of the best things my dad ever said to me was: Unless you believe in reincarnation, it’s time to be happy now. (Personally, I think this applies even if you do believe in reincarnation.) How to make the most of our time, our relationships, and ourselves - for me, these are the key questions that led me to become a marriage and family therapist. Along with traditional talk therapy, I use EMDR (if desired), as well as IFS, to help you work through present challenges and past difficult experiences so that you can live more freely in the here and now - unencumbered by old self-defeating beliefs and fears.

I implement expressive therapies, Internal Family Systems Theory (parts work), & holistic practices.
We all arrive on this Earth with a plan. Sometimes the plan gets muddled, confusing and scary. Sometimes our labeling of these experiences as “bad” can create stagnation in growth and deny us the insight that we need to stretch into our higher versions of self. When we become aware of this, choice in growth is present. Growth is constant and never ending, especially during challenging times/barriers. However, we only grow when we embrace and feel curious about the uncomfortability. Making space for curiosity allows for integration of wisdom brought by the lessons in our suffering.

For many of us, simply talking about our challenges is not enough. Our traumas live in our bodies. Muscle tension reveals how we have adapted around painful memories, emotions, and beliefs. Tension in the body has helped us cope, but now may limit our breath, relationships, and our full sense of aliveness. Rosen Method Bodywork is an integrative somatic modality that uses both touch and talk to grow awareness of how and what we are holding. As the unconscious becomes conscious, memories and emotions often arise for us to be with and support. I am now offering discounted Rosen Method Bodywork sessions as I work toward certification.

In my experience that individuals reach out for therapy because their present circumstance is difficult and they would like their present and future to be better or different. I use a person centered approach to help individuals gain greater awareness into their patterns and beliefs with the goal of creating a life grounded in wholeness, self compassion and self understanding. I have a depth of knowledge in trauma symptomatology, treatment and healing gleaned from years working with survivors of childhood and adult abuse. I also have experience with young adults pursuing educational/life goals and coping with these challenges.

I am a family-oriented psychotherapist. I work individually with adults and youth, and with families together. How we see ourselves in our families - past, present, future - often provides the foundation for how we form our initial identity. Our identity, in turn, shapes how we act at home and in the world. The therapeutic process provides first a mirror to reflect our own sometimes hidden selves, and a light to gain unique insight into who we are and what we are here to do in this world.

Life can be hard, and we don't have to go it alone. Change is possible, but it can take support to make the necessary steps. I approach each session with curiosity, directness, and humor. My goal is to help you recognize patterns, thoughts, or behaviors that no longer serve you. I work with primarily with adults and teens. I use a directive approach emphasizing evidence-supported tools that are foundational to mental and physical health. I believe the path to fulfillment is a process, not an ultimate destination. By clarifying your values, we can begin to identify both long and short term goals towards wholeness.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
