I am seeing see couples and families. - - We each make sense of the world in our own unique way in the context of the people around us. Through conversations with ourselves and with important people in our lives, we create stories and develop our sense of self. We also carry internal voices from past experiences. When difficulties arise, we can address them through reflective conversations with others. Through dialogue, listening deeply to one another, and ensuring all voices are heard, new ideas can emerge. We can find new ways forward that weren’t previously possible.

Everyone has their own path in life and their own meanings to make from their experiences. I see therapy as a place to uncover connections between past and present relationships, emotions and experiences and discover how you are willing to live. Together, we will explore your desires, emotional states, existential questions, and patterns of relationships as a way to connect more deeply with yourself. For those who are interested in outdoor therapy, I offer walk and talk therapy on local trails.

Is your marriage in trouble? Have you been trying to find a good solution and haven't found the right help yet? No one is ever taught how to be in a healthy romantic relationship, so it's not surprising that 50% of marriages end in divorce while another 30% of couples report significant challenges. If you have been struggling with communication issues, resentment, an affair, or a sexless marriage, then I can help. Unfortunately, almost half of the couples who get divorced report they regret it later. So before you make such an important decision about your future, let me help you give your marriage the best chance at success.

Change is possible. If we believe the research, therapy works regardless of the modal of therapy. Some of my clients value mind-body techniques, including Trauma Releasing Exercises®, Chinese Medicine, EMDR, and Emmett Techniques, to help change happen. Sometimes the most challenging part is starting.

In a nutshell, my approach to psychotherapy is best described as a collaborative exploration of how our past experiences affect how we experience life in the present. Through better understanding of our own internal and external worlds, greater integration of emotional experience can occur, more positive meaning about ourselves, others, and life in general can be made, and authentic personal growth will result. Not only can distressing symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and the effects of trauma, be reduced, but more full, satisfying, and resilient lives can be achieved.

In addition to weekday hours, I do have weekend sessions that open occasionally. I specialize in meaning and perspective. Seeing the world even in a slightly new way creates opportunities to think, feel, and act differently. I aim to build self-esteem while helping clients with insight, clarity, purpose, and relief. When appropriate I like using humor. Laughing is medicinal. Humor helps makes sense of human life.

I believe that everyone has the capacity to make healthy changes in their lives. I support clients to identify negative, unhelpful thinking patters while confronting destructive lifestyle choices to make needed adjustments that support health and wellbeing. Addressing past challenges can help to understand current experience but ultimately it is critical to make concrete shifts in the way we think and how we act if we are to make improvements in emotional, behavioral and mental health. We are the agents of our own change and taking radical responsibility for our lives can empower us to increase our sense of wellbeing over time.

I'm dedicated to helping individuals discover and enhance their emotional capacities. I hope to raise awareness within the sense of self, leading to stronger interpersonal relationships and a more fulfilling life. Through the therapeutic experience of being understood by another in a safe and genuine relationship, individuals develop an increased kindness for themselves and others, and are able to experience a more authentic view of themself. This self-awareness often leads us to new ways of relating to others, increased awareness and tolerance for difficult emotions, and the transformation of destructive patterns in our lives.

Everybody has a story. How we feel about and interpret that story has a significant impact on our quality of life and how we perceive the events that occur around us. In the therapeutic relationship, we’re given the freedom and support to explore the countless memories, experiences, and feelings that make us who we are. From that relationship we gain insight and understanding that allows us to be more intentional in not only how we act, but in how we feel about the important people around us.

Accepting new clients! Over the past 20+ years I have accumulated a very unique and in-depth knowledge and experience into what it takes to create positive change in our lives. There is no set way that works for everyone, and improvement is more likely when there is a willingness to engage in a process, to consider other perspectives alongside of our own, and to courageously seek assistance, all cornerstones to positive change. Ultimately, what we think can help lead us to what we become. For more specific detail please visit my website at www.dpetrocelli.org to learn more about my experience and the services I provide.

Living a human life is fraught with painful experiences, just by its nature, and not because people are doing anything wrong. Whether that manifests as sadness, loneliness, guilt, shame, boredom, numbness, stagnation, anxiety, or fear, when these feelings show up, they can leave us feeling trapped and powerless in the face of the challenges of life. My goal is to provide a non-judgmental environment in which people can feel free to build awareness of their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, habits, and relationship dynamics. This awareness provides the basis for personal transformation.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
