I wish to serve as a guide for my clients on their own journey towards self-discovery. I am practicing humanistic psychology and my primary focus is to create an empathetic, non-judgmental, and safe therapeutic relationship. By using person-centered counseling, I am able to help my clients discover their authentic selves. I wish to help reduce anxiety and aid my clients in developing a positive self-image for themselves. I am interested in learning and understanding my clients’ self-perceptions and view of their own reality. My belief is that our worth is conditioned by others and this often can be detrimental to our mental health.

My path to counseling began in my 20s while living at Buddhist meditation centers, where I discovered the power of mindfulness, empowering relationships, and self-awareness.
There are moments in life when we need a safe, non-judgmental space to show up authentically and be fully seen and heard. I emphasize a collaborative therapeutic relationship built on safety, trust, and understanding. My aim is to provide a compassionate, empowering environment that supports individuals in cultivating well-being and fulfillment.

I draw on my background as a yoga and mindfulness instructor, research on self compassion, attachment and Nonviolent Communication to help facilitate clients' growth and insight.
The world renowned teacher, Pema Chodron, once said that "compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It is a relationship between equals". This quote speaks to the heart of my clinical practice. I view therapy as a journey that we take together, one step at a time. We will travel together on this path and find ways to support a life of health and wellbeing that are meaningful to you.

More than 30 years of practice as a psychologist has taught me that true healing arrises within a deep and trusting relationship with each individual, couple and group with whom I work. My colleague Dr. Peter Wrycza calls this work "Conversations on the edge of silence" Our thinking mind is a marvelous tool when it is used appropriately. The deeper problem is that the thinking mind can keep us locked into our stories of either the past or the future. Much of the work is about exploring ways to become more present in life and release the historic patterns and beliefs that keep us stuck in the illusion of separation from one another.

I conceptualize therapy as a collaborative process in which therapist and client determine treatment content and goals, working to create an environment of compassion, challenge and insight capable of motivating those disruptive changes which constitute so much of the meaning of therapy. In attempting to individualize treatment, I cultivate an integrative responsiveness utilizing those techniques that seem best able to serve the client's needs and promote therapeutic goals. Often these goals extend beyond symptom relief to include the enhancement of psychological capacities and resources through self exploration and discovery in the context of a safe and authentic therapeutic relationship.

Clients come to me when they are feeling 'life' is much too painful. Perhaps a loved one has just died ; they have been bullied or abused by someone at work or in a relationship; they are experiencing chronic physical pain; parenting is driving them crazy; financial pressures are unbearable. Whatever the issues, the pain that is felt indicates there is a great deal to be learned. I work closely with my clients as clarity emerges; awareness grows; the impossible becomes possible.

Reaching out for help can be scary, yet here you are! Congrats on taking that first step. Sometimes we have to do the scary thing when we want more for ourselves. Something I hear again and again from my clients is: after they asked for help, some of the weight they had been carrying around came off. I hope the same will be true for you. Therapy has brought me hope. And I believe it can do the same for you. Human beings are profoundly resilient. We have this ability to come back from our struggles. Therapy offers a reset to figure out our next step and how to get there.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
