I believe each of us is a unique work of art in progress. Therapy is a process of discovering how your deepest self wants to be expressed in the world and then finding the inner resources to live that out. During darker periods of life, we might question the meaning of things, feel flawed or broken, and long for what’s out of reach. These times can signify a loss of connection to our innermost selves and be a call to a new way of living. Our work together will explore pains and patterns that continue to show themselves, family and social systems that shape self-concept, and inner workings of personality that make you who you are.

I believe that taking responsibility for ourselves and choosing how to respond to our circumstances is always the best path forward, regardless of the struggles we're facing. While initially uncomfortable, this approach ultimately increases self-confidence, improves relationships, and generates resilience and adaptability to life's challenges. With these concepts in mind, I work closely with clients who want to slow down, assess their situation, identify choice-points, and take actionable steps toward improving what is within their control while simultaneously learning to accept what is outside of their control.

One of the best things my dad ever said to me was: Unless you believe in reincarnation, it’s time to be happy now. (Personally, I think this applies even if you do believe in reincarnation.) How to make the most of our time, our relationships, and ourselves - for me, these are the key questions that led me to become a marriage and family therapist. Along with traditional talk therapy, I use EMDR (if desired), as well as IFS, to help you work through present challenges and past difficult experiences so that you can live more freely in the here and now - unencumbered by old self-defeating beliefs and fears.

In IFS however there are no bad parts.
Many of us have internal critical voices telling us: "Get it right! Achieve more! Work harder! That was stupid! Lose weight! Quit drinking so much! Stop being selfish! Stop caring about what others think!" You are familiar with the tapes that run in your head and keep you ruminating about your mistakes or worrying about the future. In Internal Family Systems (IFS) individual therapy & Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO) couple therapy, we recognize these messages as different aspects of our personality, or “parts” of us, who perhaps lead us to experiences of feeling anxious, depressed, or behaving harmfully to ourselves and others.

I employ experiential and somatic practices, as well as DBT, IFS, & other therapeutic models.
If you have made it this far, I commend you for your courage. Seeking support is a huge step! The longer I’ve lived, the more I’ve understood that life brings both joy and pain, success and failure, beginnings and endings, and this duality can often bring dissonance within us, as we work to make meaning of it all. Healing and wellness are deeply personal to everyone’s journey, and I aim to honor your diverse life experiences through this work. On this journey, we’ll create an environment where you can be free to explore who you are, your needs, your values, and the priorities for your life in a safe space.

I am licensed in Connecticut and Vermont. I am an EMDRIA certified therapist, approved consultant and EMDR trainer. I use a warm and supportive, yet semi-structured and intentional approach for both in-person and telehealth sessions. I do both short-term (EMDR Intensives) and more comprehensive (long-term) therapy. I can work with you to construct a plan to overcome life's challenges and help move you to a more desired outcome. I use systems theory (how we interact with the world and ourselves) and EMDR therapy (helping brains naturally rewire in a more adaptive way), in combination with IFS and various other approaches.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
