Do you struggle with substance use as your primary diagnosis or concern and are ready to be empowered to make positive change in your life? Research shows it does not matter what circumstances bring a person to substance abuse counseling but the individual effort they are willing to put forth. My goal is to meet a person where they are, and assist in providing the tools necessary for success.

"Man never made any material as resilient as the human spirit." -Bernard Williams. As a therapist I strive to support my clients in building their resiliency and guiding the healing process. Asking for help is the first step, and I would welcome the opportunity to travel with you on that path. I also believe that in order to feel better, you must start thinking better, so I offer a safe, laid back and non-judgmental atmosphere to do just that. When the fear of judgement is removed, amazing progress can happen.

You’ve been told to “get over it,” that you “shouldn’t feel that way,” and that you’re “so negative.” So you tried to ignore your pain and it got stronger. You reprimanded yourself when difficult emotions surfaced. You found yourself feigning happiness to please those you spend time with. You’ve bottled up the past, feel unsteady in the present, and fear the future. Your ability to balance family commitments, work responsibilities, and social obligations is put to the test each day. You’re losing sight of who you are and where you’re going, but you haven’t lost your hope.

I strongly believe that everyone has a story to tell. Sometimes, life and circumstances outside of our control muddy that story, leaving us confused and stuck in the same chapter over and over again. I work with clients from a person-centered perspective to identify their current needs and strengths. Utilizing evidenced-based practices and interventions, I aim to work alongside clients to foster resiliency and personal agency in writing their own narrative.

Many are called to the profession of counseling, but very few are chosen. I have been chosen to guide others in finding direction, insight, and purpose. I am confident, compassionate, and unwavering in my desire to help clients see the light in the face of darkness. While my general philosophy is that therapy should be interpersonal, client-centered, and support based, I also believe in asking tough questions that challenge my client's existing mental conceptions and problem solving methodologies. My personal motto is "Challenge the thinking; change the behavior." Your mind is the battlefield of your life. Let me help you win!

I work primarily with adults. I have spent my career helping people to overcome depression, anxiety, transition, grief and loss and other life challenging issues. I am interested in working with people who are in recovery from substance use. So often during the recovery process, issues that have been long covered over by years of substance use begin to surface. We work together to root out and resolve some of the life-long concerns that may have been contributing factors to substance use.

We're all trying to get through life....and we weren't meant to navigate it alone. Sometimes we just need an ear, a shoulder, or someone to hold up the proverbial roadmap and walk alongside us to keep it moving forward. Life carries us through many seasons, often resulting in confusion, chaos, anxiety, depression, illness, grief, and traumatic events. Sometimes they happen as children and young adults, resulting in "stuff" we carry into our adulthood; this has an enormous impact on the quality of our lives. The good news is, there's help! You don't have to suffer alone and in silence.

Drug Abuse Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
