Finding the right therapist is a lot like dating. Are you swiping through the profiles on psychology today and feeling that everyone blends together to the point of where you don't remember who is who? Or are you drained from calling around and finding that nobody is taking on new clients? We hear it all the time and we get it. At Genesis Mental Health Inc, we brought together a team of diverse clinicians across Northern Virginia in terms of gender and ethnicity that understand life situations that have brought you to this point.

Do you find yourself broken, uncertain with your future and how to heal from your trauma? You second guess your relationships, and have difficulty trusting others? You want to appear like you have it all together, but you are struggling to feel purpose, and life full of peace and happiness. You may be fed up with the inability to move forward from traumatic events, feeling alone or not enough. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to get unstuck and challenge yourself. Most of all, you’re ready to gain acceptance, confidence and peace.

During sessions, you'll be provided a therapeutic space where you can retreat and rejuvenate. In this space, you can expect to be heard, without judgment. Through dialogue and intentional use of evidence-based interventions, you will discover the light that you are. Moving forward sometimes requires looking back, but that doesn't mean it has to be an unbearable process. Through the use of sensory engagement tools, you will learn to ground yourself in the midst of your most daunting memories and emotions.

Exploring therapy is not an easy decision; therefore it is our mission to make therapy as open, comfortable, and effective as possible for each client. The first goal for each individual entering my practice is to establish an environment of comfort and safety. For those interested, therapy animals are available to provide additional support throughout the experience. Each person who enters my practice is embraced as an individual, and the therapeutic experience is tailored specifically to best meet each person's needs.

We would probably all like to be living our best life but many of us can’t quite figure out how to make that happen. Maybe we find ourselves stuck in unhealthy patterns of communicating and we don't know how to change. We might have personal goals we are trying to reach but just can seem to make them happen. Perhaps we have trauma that we need to resolve that has left an impact on our day-to-day functioning. Maybe we are looking for connection with others but continue feeling disconnected and unfulfilled by our personal relationships. It is possible to experience satisfaction and fulfillment in our daily lives.

There are many reasons people seek mental health care, perhaps they're going through a tough season in life or there has been complex trauma. Regardless of a client's reason for seeking therapy, my primary goal is to create a relationship supported by comfort and safety. I believe in collaborating with my clients to create a therapeutic plan that is specifically tailored to their individual needs and goals. For those interested I do offer a therapy animal to sit in on sessions and provide additional support.

I encourage clients to take the lead on what they would like to discuss in therapy. I love working with juniors-seniors in high school as they are navigating their next steps as well as college students who need a listening ear. I also love working with adult women as they navigate their own mental health concerns as well as problems in their relationship, work, family, friendships etc. I have recently developed an interest in the last year of working with prenatal, postnatal and perinatal women after the birth of my daughter years ago. I know how difficult this process is and empathize with how long it takes to feel "normal" again.

Not accepting new clients
The decision to begin therapy can be a difficult one. That's why my goal is to provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere where individuals can engage in exploration that leads to growth and positive change. I do this by incorporating a laid back style with the philosophy that therapy cannot be one size fits all and needs to be tailored to each individual client. It's then clients will be able to discover what impacts their lives, learn to understand their emotions and develop a new found sense of self awareness.

I specialize in the relationships we have with ourselves, partners, children, and families. Whether a child or adult, our behaviors can always be made sense of when seen as a bid for connection, security, co-regulation, or validation. Where responses feel disruptive, defiant, shut down, withdrawn, critical, or overwhelming, they are a protest against disconnection or change, indications of a missed need, or a signal that whatever is happening is outside of a capacity to cope at that moment. I make space for everyone’s resourceful, brilliant, and sometimes limiting patterns, emotions, needs, protectors, and adaptations.

When we are in conflict, disconnection, or misunderstanding with a loved one, we all experience distress. Our protective strategies come alive, shutting down, criticizing, going numb, or pursuing for reconnection. We find ourselves in the same old dance, talking different relational languages we can’t seem to reconcile, having the same old fight. I help individuals and couples talk about what is happening inside them, identify needs, and understand what is at the core of any recurring patterns. I make space for all the ways life has shaped each of you, how this impacts your interactions, and where the misses are taking place.

I specialize in cultivating a safe space for couples to reconnect, resolve well-worn patterns, and repair old wounds. It might be that each of you has a different way of navigating emotions, conflict, disconnection, or stress. For most couples, this includes one partner pursuing connection or resolution, upping the ante when they can’t feel their important other, and the other partner withdrawing or shutting down in an effort to reduce tension and diffuse the conflict. Many couples find these different relational strategies can lead to cycles of frustration, misunderstanding, pain, and protectiveness they can’t find a way out of.

In an ideal world, our relationship experiences are secure, safe, accessible, and responsive and we learn we can trust and are loveable, worthy, and deserving of our needs being met. When this is not our experience, we find ways to adapt and survive moments of disconnection, invalidation, hurt, or overwhelm. This plays out as self-limiting beliefs, hiding parts of who we are, denying or being flooded with emotions, shutting down, people pleasing, perfectionism, hustling for our worth, and/or building up our protections. I work with adults, children (2-18), parents, and families to connect, heal, and be each other's greatest resource

Life and relationships sometimes offer inaccurate messages about who we are, what we deserve, and what is available to us. Where you have felt invalidated, shamed, limited, or unsafe, I want to help you rewrite your story. I am passionate about connection, communication, mind-body-soul healing, and guiding others into their light. I support individuals and couples in identifying patterns such as over-functioning, perfectionism, people-pleasing, shutting down, withdrawing, or focusing on tasks. As we explore the roots of these strategies, we can find new ways to relate, meet needs, build self-worth, and heal old hurts.

Ideally, our early experiences of connection were secure, safe, accessible, and responsive and we developed an internal sense of ourselves as loveable, worthy, and deserving of getting our needs met. But what happens when this has not been our experience? Many of us have had to find ways to adapt and survive moments of disconnect, invalidation, or criticism. This can often mean we hold beliefs about ourselves that are limiting, worry that we have to hide or minimize parts of who we are, deny certain emotions, hustle for our worth, and/or build up layers of protection. I can support you to heal, connect, and create lasting change.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
