Life can get hard, no matter how old you are or how “great” you appear to have it. Navigating through daily stressors can take a toll on you, and make it hard to concentrate at work and(or) school, communicate with your family and friends, and do the things you usually love. These stressors can include relationship concerns, peer conflicts, parental conflicts/difficulties, continuing to make“bad” decisions; unresolved childhood concerns, un-fulfillment at work, or difficulties dealing with past trauma.

During our sessions, we will focus on any issues that have been difficult for you, your family, or significant other to navigate; allowing you a supportive space to process and appropriately cope in a world where you may be expected to allow others feelings, wants or needs to take precedence over your own.
Hello! Are you having a difficult time in life right now? Are your relationships struggling, are you struggling to maintain overall? I can help you overcome this and more, by providing therapy to suit your needs. My approach to therapy is a collaborative one, where I will work with you as an individual, family, or couple to reach your personal or relationship goals. Culturally speaking, as a Black American, I am most sensitive to the issues that are specific to Black people; particularly focusing on how to build stronger families in the Black community and how to cope with the stressors of our daily life experiences.

Every human being at times experiences sadness, anxiety, anger, shame, fear, hopelessness, guilt, uncertainty. But for some, their daily lives are significantly impacted. You may be struggling with your marriage, partnership, children, family, friends, employer, co-workers. Depression and anxiety may cause you to avoid doing the things that matter and/or to choose unhealthy ways of coping. Some struggle with anger issues that result in legal, relationship and/or employment problems. Others have experienced traumatic events as children and/or adults. While pain in life is inevitable, it does not have to take over our lives.

I approach counseling from a cognitive behavioral perspective, meaning that I believe that our thoughts produce our feelings and our feelings produce our behaviors. However, I also use EMDR and Internal Family Systems in combination with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to give my clients a range of avenues to find their healing. I try to make every session practical and productive. I have also written a book, "Forgive and Live", which I use in group therapy and has recently been re-written as a video series.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I primarily work with individuals and couples, and families.
Just about everyone will experience difficulty at some point in their lives, whether that means grief, relationship conflict, mental health concerns, struggles with identity and purpose, or the question of worthiness and success. It can be difficult to know how to maneuver through the challenges that life can throw our way, and at times it's hard to know where to turn. My goal is to help create an opportunity to explore the workings of your mind, and to help guide you to self-discovery, knowledge, and peace.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
