I feel a strong path to help older women. As an older woman, there are many life experiences: in going through life’s journey, one has had a myriad of challenges: home and family, work outside and inside the home. Struggling with health issues: including pain, frustration, and adjustments. There are births, deaths, and anniversary dates that one may be reckoning with. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming. I would love to hear your personal story! And to give you an opportunity to share your life’s challenges and find hope in your therapy with myself. You can reach a higher point in self care, self esteem and hold your head up high!

I see adults 21 and up, and seniors over 65, with a variety of behavioral health challenges: trauma, depression, anxiety, work, relationships, aging, adjusting to change, stress, motivation, isolation, women's and men's issues. I'm a dad with three adult children, two of whom are women. My female clients tell me they’re more comfortable with me than with a female therapist. Tap into my extensive certification and experience with active military, veterans, and family members. Reduce the effects of PTSD, depression, anxiety and trauma. Get tools to adjust to civilian life, and adjust to family life after your years of service.

I have experience working with older adults, adults, (teens 17+), veterans, active-duty military and their families, college students, EMS personnel, and caregivers in the treatment of mental health and life transition issues, trauma, marital issues, interpersonal issues, deployment, military separation, reunification, divorce, work and school issues.
Let’s face it, sometimes life can be challenging which can hinder personal growth, happiness, relationships, quality of life, professional success, parenting among other things. You feel like you are spinning your wheels but they are stuck in the mud! You feel exhausted, overwhelmed, anxious, sad and/or irritated. Effecting change takes work but YOU can master the skills to cope with these feelings and regain control of your life! Whether your goal is meaningful change, achieving short or life long goals, talking through things on your mind or need some post graduate supervision, I’m here to help and only a phone call/email away!

Burnout: It has been said “it’s lonely at the top”. You have reached the top in your career, but your personal life is in shambles or you’re experiencing “burnout”. The Therapist problem solves and suggests interventions for their clients but, who can the Therapist talk to? You’re a Veteran struggling to come back to the “Real World”, and every day and night are a battle with PTSD symptoms. You may be a parent that is at the “end of your rope” with a child with Autism, ADHD, or significant depression and is exhibiting negative behaviors in the home and at school. You may need help in processing loss, divorce, and retirement.

Healing starts when we can acknowledge our past/current hurts. As we work on releasing our past/present life challenges, it may seem as if it is easier to keep our pains bottled up inside. As your therapist, I will assist you with obtaining the necessary tools needed to overcome those life challenges. Although healing is not an easy journey, it’s worth it. We will work together in a safe, confidential, and judgment-free environment to share your truths and overcome whatever lemons life has thrown your way. Let’s make lemonade.

Sometimes in life it can be difficult to find your path of growth due to past, current or unforeseen stressors. I like to think of therapy as us having a casual conversation that ebbs and flows based on where you are in that moment. It can seem intimidating but I am here to tell you that you will not go through this journey of growth alone. I want you to reach whatever goals and life changes you are looking for while enjoying the process as much as possible, and experiencing yourself in new ways.

In a world full of so many different people we are bound to encounter a vast array of road blocks. Some are easy to verbalize and some are not. Some of the things we experience are small and can be minimized but some cannot. Sometimes we don’t trust enough to share and sometimes we do not know how to communicate what we are feeling, when we are feeling and why we are feeling. Embrace gives us the opportunity to be open to the therapeutic process, embrace it like a warm hug of comfort. To Embrace the process we must first start with the Problem. To Trust the Journey we must envision where we want to be in our lives and go for it.

Adults try to solve problems themselves so it is embarrassing to admit need for input. Arguments with spouses, relatives, phobias, infidelity, porn addiction, workaholism, when they are persistent, cause people to consult me to figure out what's going on. If I can find factors in their functioning of which they are unaware, and bring those to their attention, they may be able to find solutions. One goal of mine and of my patients is to solve problems and be done with me and treatment. Confidentiality is critical. You will not see anyone else except me in my office or on zoom. I treat people and consult with therapists daily.

Geriatric and Seniors Therapists

Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?

Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, dementia, and physical mobility challenges.

How can geriatric therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?

Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

How is counseling for elderly different from counseling for other age groups?

Many aspects of geriatric counseling are similar to counseling in younger age groups; in general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. However, therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

Can geriatric counseling help people who suffer from dementia?

Counseling can be highly effective for aging adults with dementia. While some therapists specializing in dementia may work with clients solely on topics surrounding memory loss, they can also assist clients with conditions that may co-occur at old age, such as anxiety or depression. Counselors specializing in working with older adults can also offer an objective assessment of a client’s functioning or disease progression to caregivers, and they may be particularly knowledgeable about community resources that may benefit dementia clients and their families. Therapists specializing in dementia may also be trained in specialized forms of therapy for memory-loss|memory loss, such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)—which can help mentally stimulate dementia clients to preserve cognitive functioning.
