I understand that the idea of going to therapy can be daunting, and I strive to provide a safe and affirming space in which we can explore what brought you here. No matter what you may be struggling with, we all deserve support, connection, and healing. My approach is trauma-informed and draws from training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I believe that the relationship between client and therapist should be grounded in empathy, compassion, and the desire to work collaboratively to build on existing strengths and learn new skills.

My approach to therapy begins with forming mutual trust. I believe in the importance of the therapeutic relationship, the right 'fit', and that a foundation of support and connection can empower you to explore your past and understand how it is impacting your 'now'.

I am optimistic in my therapeutic approach helping ladies with reproductive mental health, and couples, families, and individuals (adolescents/adults) who struggle with issues that affect their daily functioning. My goal is to empower clients to understand themselves, to highlight strengths, positive traits, coping skills, and encourage the potential that emerges during the therapeutic process. Life today is stressful under good circumstances but when life throws us off balance we need a safe place to process our thoughts and feelings to regain wellness in our life.

I specialize in working with adults with eating disorders and disordered eating, and the conditions that often co-occur with eating concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and trauma. I also have an extensive research background in chronic fatigue syndrome (sometimes called myalgic encephalomyelitis or ME/CFS) and have worked on multiple NIH-funded studies; I am aware of the unique challenges faced by individuals living with ME/CFS and other poorly understood, stigmatized health conditions. You’ve made it this far, now what? Starting your counseling journey can be overwhelming and confusing at times. The most important things to remember are that you are worth the effort, to always be curious, and that I am here to help support you through your process. It has always been clear to me that it takes a community to support an individual. We often turn to our families, friends, educators, and leaders for guidance in challenging situations. My role as a counselor is to help guide you through the challenges you might be facing in a confidential, empathetic, and supportive environment.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
