I work with teens and adults that are struggling in their lives to feel like they are "enough". They want to be seen by their families, parents, significant others, bosses, the world as worthy; to feel confident and brave, even when their insecurities may continue to pop up. They want to feel connected to their friends, partners, and children. Many of my clients have survived toxic or abusive relationships, suffered unimaginable losses, and are continuing to deal with issues related to adoption and/or a difficult childhood. As an adopted person myself, I have a unique understanding around adoption and attachment related needs.

Welcome. Our large practice has over 200 openings! We focus on the relationship with your therapist. Working through conflicts or past pain happens through experiencing, not just through merely reading or thinking about things. Gaining self acceptance and discovering how to bring an open heart to your family or intimate relationships does not come simply from acquiring an insight, or from reading a "how to" book. It starts with the healing relationship... and the only way you will find out how comfortable you might feel with your therapist is to talk to them in person. My focus in treatment is on the relationship.

The individuals who work with me find a space of open, affirmative, and empowering support that promotes self-determination and enhanced personal growth. I see young adults, adults, and teens (16+) who seek support in facing some of life’s most difficult challenges, trauma, loss, and life transition. Additionally, I am committed to advocacy and work to address systemic issues that impact the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. My goal is to create a safe and compassionate space for clients to explore their challenges and strengths, build skills and resilience, and achieve their goals for personal growth.

I enjoy working with children, teens, and young adults, supporting them through challenging situations by providing the necessary tools for their healing journey. These challenges may include parent-child conflicts, academic difficulties, or traumatic childhood experiences. Since each person is unique, these challenges can manifest in a variety of symptoms, which I view as road maps to healing. By developing effective skills and practicing judgment-free awareness and acceptance of these “symptoms,” we can enable change and growth.

You are dissatisfied with your life. Every day is busy. Sleep is hard to come by. You feel edgy and anxious. Relationships aren't what you expected - poor communication, little or no sex... you and your partner are fighting or just not talking. You might have considered an affair (or are already having one, but that isn't really working either). You've thought about talking to someone, but that takes time that you don't really have, and talking to someone you don't know is uncomfortable.

I am a psychologist in the Tysons Corner area and have been seeing clients for 34 years. My goal is to create a therapy experience that feels respectul, supportive, safe and yet challenging. As a therapist I work in a number of ways. I use cognitive behavioral therapy, because I believe strongly in the power of words. One goal is to identify self-destructive thought patterns and to develop new empowering patterns. I also use insight therapy to release the hold of old perceptions and feelings which are no longer helpful and to consciously choose the life you want now.

I am a practicing clinical psychologist for over 40 years. My major focus is to help clients solve their " problems in living." My approach is developmental and research based. We pass through many transitions over the course of our lives that may present emotional and behavioral challenges at each stage of life. My treatment approach is eclectic i.e a tapestry of psychoanalytic, humanistic, behavioral and existential. Successful treatment outcomes often depend on a combination of approaches to resolve problems. Above all, I try to ensure that all therapy occurs in a positive, safe, supportive and confidential environment.

You will be offered a safe and respectful environment in which to share your unique experiences. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) will help you change your thoughts, change your life! This is absolutely true, yet sometimes you might experience trying to think yourself into feeling better and it's simply not working. Your life looks complete, or almost, but you can't feel it. You are frustrated that your thoughts and feelings are not in agreement. At a thinking level, you know you didn't cause what happened, yet still feel like it's your fault and this keeps you stuck.

Over 30 years of experience as a social worker has taught me that it takes a lot of courage to ask for help. I have great respect for anyone who has that courage. Most of us feel we can fix things ourselves and most of the time we probably can, but sometimes we feel completely overwhelmed by circumstances beyond our control. At such times, the expertise of a trained therapist can help us to find the strength to work through the issues that prevent us from taking the actions necessary to create fresh options and opportunities in our lives. I feel so lucky to be doing a job I love so much. I care deeply about helping people move beyond their perceived limitations to live a life that is deeply fulfilling and joyful.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
