Trauma Focused Therapists in South Riding, VA
The professionals at the Resilience Network understand that we all learn best through creative play and positive interactions. Our goal is to teach and practice the skills necessary for families to be the best they can be. We work from a Studio filled with art, crafts, and activity yet our work is seriously important. We teach children about relationship, compassion, problem solving, situational awareness, persisting when things become difficult and how to complete tasks. Many of our clients are recovering from trauma, adverse events or behavior challenges. We work with the whole family to create support and understanding.

My treatment approach is person-centered. I bring an empathic, genuine, active and non-judgmental attitude to my encounter with each client to facilitate a safe and collaborative exploration of contributing factors to the problem (s) addressed in therapy, which in turn allows me to draw from interventions that best fit the client. My treatment philosophy is that the aim of psychotherapy is to help clients feel better and become empowered with gained awareness of themselves and their life situation (s) and skills with which to lead a more satisfying life.

In my 13+ years of being a therapist I have found that the traditional face to face support works wonders for some, but is not a good fit for others. Some of my clients have found sitting in one place for 45 minutes a challenge, or feel too much pressure to truly open up and share what they are thinking and feeling. With this in mind, I hope that my practice will serve as a new space for people seeking support in a slightly different manner. I hope to use "walk and talk therapy" to give an outlet to those who would usually outright avoid counseling, or not fully invest as it doesn't work for them.

There are many reasons people seek mental health care, perhaps they're going through a tough season in life or there has been complex trauma. Regardless of a client's reason for seeking therapy, my primary goal is to create a relationship supported by comfort and safety. I believe in collaborating with my clients to create a therapeutic plan that is specifically tailored to their individual needs and goals. For those interested I do offer a therapy animal to sit in on sessions and provide additional support.

Do you experience intense emotions that interfere with your relationships or personal goals? The world around us can feel chaotic or overwhelming at times, yet reacting on our immediate emotions can actually make things worse. We often engage in destructive behaviors because they make us feel better in the moment and give us a sense of control in an uncontrollable situation yet end up causing harm in the long run. Instead, we can learn to take a step back, understand and acknowledge our feelings, and make choices that lead to our desired outcome without leaving a path of destruction that we are later responsible for cleaning up.

Despite outward success, the best of us can often feel lonely, misunderstood, and inadequate. Do you feel disconnected from yourself and loved ones? Are you struggling with finding your place in the world and embracing your intersecting identities? Have you been grappling with how to cope with a loss of a loved one? “We do not see things as they are, we see them- as we are.” Penned by Anais Ninn, this quote beautifully illustrates that our perspective, which is affected by our life experiences, greatly influences how we view our world. I love guiding clients to focus their mental lens on their sources of strength instead of worries or uncontrollable circumstances. I have worked as a school counselor at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. I am a parent of three children so I understand the struggles of parenting. I have been married for 25 years, so I understand relationship issues too.

I guide clients to understand what is driving their negative thoughts, why you can’t get out of the rut you find yourself in. We can work together to heal anxiety, depression, and trauma. Don't let your past keep controlling your future. Let's shift patterns that are running your life. Difficult experiences often result in patterns of thinking and behaviors that don't serve us well today. Have you ever felt like "I don't deserve...", "I can't put my needs first..", "I need to be one way for someone to love me, trust me, keep my job, keep my partner"? Let's change these patterns.

Your identities and history of marginalization impact how you move through the world and can make living an authentic, fulfilling life seemingly impossible. Your unique lived experiences can leave you feeling misunderstood, alone, and plagued with worry. You might have trouble sleeping or concentrating, and you feel guilty, shameful, and irritable. Becoming your most empowered and confident self comes with challenges, and may come with isolation and other relationship changes.
