I understand that not one thing fits for all, which is why I offer a variety of approaches through art materials, play, and/or regular therapeutic talk therapy.
It's overwhelming to grow up in this new stress filled culture, dealing with the intense pressure of family, academics, peers, and now social media! When words are not enough, Art Therapy, a combination of counseling and art making, can bring to light the uncertainty that is felt on the inside. For children, the focus is on the process of art-making to practice healthy habits while improving executive functioning skills. For teens and Adult-children finding meaning and purpose through artistic symbols/metaphors can reduce anxiety about the future. Anyone can do Art Therapy!

Don't give up! Using a combination of trauma work, art therapy, and neurofeedback, we'll create a treatment plan specifically for you.
Nothing has been the same since that terrible event. In a moment, your life was split into two parts: before and after. It's already taken so much from you and affects everything you do. Physically, you're breaking down. Sleep is next to impossible, and you can't remember when you didn't have a splitting tension headache. You're always on edge, ready for the next threat to present itself. You never know how you're going to react from one moment to the next. And the more you fight for control, the less you have. You long for a life of peace, free from the constant despair. But you just don't know how to get it. It feels hopeless.

While my theraputic approach is grounded in psychodynamic theory, I utilize CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, expressive art, and play therapy techniques.
Life tends to throw us curve balls. With all of our energy spent juggling obligations, responsibilities, and managing daily stresses, it's easy to wake up one day and realize that you just feel "stuck." Making the decision to begin therapy can be difficult, but it's the first step towards regaining control of your life. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, experiencing relationship difficulties, or just want a different perspective on whatever is holding you back, I'm here to help you navigate and overcome these challenges. Every person's situation is unique. I do not treat the therapeutic process as "one-size-fits all."

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
