Whether you are a child, teenager, or adult of any age, struggling with anxiety, sadness, grief, or trauma, whatever it is that brings you here, welcome. When we reach a crossroads or struggle to move forward, therapy can broaden our perspectives and offer new insights. As we take what we learn in therapy and apply it in our lives, we can begin to feel different: lighter, richer, fuller. It can feel like opening a window to allow more oxygen and light to enter.

Trauma and other adverse experiences can play a significant role in how we view ourselves and interact with the world around us. Even though we may intellectually know that our thoughts and responses aren't serving us, our wounded parts may be in the driver's seat. I create a safe and affirming space for older adolescent and adult clients to both process and develop skills to help them move away from just "surviving." I strive to embody cultural humility and a passion for social justice in my work. My goal is to partner with clients to help them develop self-compassionate understanding and foster meaningful changes in their lives.

No matter who you are, life is always changing, filled with challenges, transitions, doubts, and sometimes successes. This is the human experience, and you do not have to go it alone. Counseling is an available resource to help hone your natural talents and skills to find vision, motivation, meaning, and resolve through your choices and experiences. With the support of a professional counselor there are no dead-end scenarios. I thoroughly believe in meeting clients where they are at, treating individuals with dignity and respect no matter who they are or where they come from, celebrating differences and individuality.

Is life becoming too difficult, or is stress wearing you down? You are not alone. Millions of adults in the United States are affected by anxiety and depression yearly. Have you been living with OCD going without treatment? OCD can be debilitating and difficult to manage, but you do not have to live a life burdened by these problems. As a clinical psychologist, I have specialized training in evidence-based approaches such as CBT and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat anxiety, depression, stress, and exposure and response prevention, a first-line treatment for OCD.

You are a high achieving individual in many ways, but seem to come up short when it comes to having meaningful, successful relationships with others and struggle with self confidence. You have been defined by others in your life as “successful” but are still left feeling unfilled and unhappy. Maybe negative thoughts swirl around your head when you are trying to get work done or fall asleep at night. Or maybe you experience difficulty concentrating because you are so worried if the person next to you is upset with you and constantly worry if you can make the people around you happy.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
