In my initial training experience as a hospital chaplain, I encountered patients and families in crisis, often going through personal oceans of grief and loss. As an intern at an urban Veterans Administration's behavioral health clinic, I saw how the trauma of war and chronic mental illness challenged patients, already isolated, even in their own families. At the Royal Edinburgh Hospital (Scotland) and at Tavistock Institute (London), I learned to think not just with my head, but also with my gut. My post-MSW career included work at a state mental hospital and as a Clinical Associate in Duke's Department of Psychiatry.

Pal for medication evaluation and management.
Burnout: It has been said “it’s lonely at the top”. You have reached the top in your career, but your personal life is in shambles or you’re experiencing “burnout”. The Therapist problem solves and suggests interventions for their clients but, who can the Therapist talk to? You’re a Veteran struggling to come back to the “Real World”, and every day and night are a battle with PTSD symptoms. You may be a parent that is at the “end of your rope” with a child with Autism, ADHD, or significant depression and is exhibiting negative behaviors in the home and at school. You may need help in processing loss, divorce, and retirement.

Have you been avoiding fights with your partner? Does communication seem impossible? Was your trust broken? Do you feel like you’re both walking on eggshells, trying not to blow up? This can be very painful, and it’s common for couples. Unfortunately, many people learn to avoid all conflicts in relationships. This can lead to resentment, which can cause more frequent fighting and lead to long-term problems.

I grew up with curiosity and befuddlement in equal measures. Only in college did I begin to trust in my ability to think and pursue a path that led to graduate work and training as an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). Those training experiences included service as a hospital chaplain and the personal oceans of grief and loss. As an intern at a Veterans Administration's behavioral health clinic, and how war and chronic mental illness crossed paths daily to challenge patients, already isolated, even in their own families.

You may cry a bit, and you may laugh about typically hu man things we all do, and at the end of our work together, you will feel better and move forward.
There will be times in your life where you will struggle to make a decision about your job, or a relationship, or you may experience overwhelming anxiety or become depressed because you just feel stuck. You may have experienced a traumatic event when you were younger that continues to get in the way of fully enjoying your life. You may have received difficult news about your health or recently lost a friend or family member and your capacity to enjoy life is diminished.

I offer comfort and guidance to people struggling to find their way through a hard transition or uncertain situation. Sessions with me are easy, but engaged and lively, and I strive to create a safe, inclusive environment. I am highly influenced by Hu manistic Psychology, Carl Jung, and both Eastern and Western philosophies and spiritual traditions. As such, I regard suffering as a natural and expected part of the hu man condition, not as evidence of a personal defect.
