Sometimes it is difficult to navigate life and the curve-balls that it throws at us! Having to get through the day and struggling with anxiety or feelings of depression are just a few. Maybe you endured a traumatic event and it's been causing you trauma and distress. Perhaps you have a child that has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit hypo/hyperactive Disorder? If so, your child may be having difficulty with paying attention, controlling emotions, communication or social interactions. I'd love to help build upon your strengths and help you further succeed in this world that we are navigating!

If you or someone you know is experiencing a problem that might call for professional help, whether the problem is depression, anxiety, phobias, marital or family strife, identity crisis, coping with chronic illness, substance abuse or any problem that interferes with daily living, my fellow clinical psychologists at Commonwealth Psychological Associates and I can be of help. It takes courage to ask for help, but early treatment can keep small problems from becoming larger ones that seem unsolvable. We recognize this and through personal care, offer specialized services and modern therapies to meet your specific needs.

The fulfillment that you’re hoping to experience requires a journey of healing that starts with you taking the first step - and deep healing starts within. The difficulties that life brings can truly bog you down, preventing you from being the healthiest version of yourself.

When patients ask, “What can you tell me about your practice?" I say I am very comfortable working with adults-18 and older, couples, children and families. The patients I see in my practice are wanting help with issues of anger and stress; anxiety, panic and phobias; grief and depression; life-cycle changes; relationship issues; career challenges; and self-esteem. Coordination of care with other medical professionals is an important part of my practice and allows for opportunities to develop a comprehensive care approach to your treatment.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, sad, worried, stressed out, or stuck? Are you struggling with life’s challenges or your relationships? I believe that therapy in a safe, accepting, and compassionate space allows for the self-understanding necessary for growth and healing. I work with adults and young adults (18+) to explore feelings and gain a better self-understanding, specializing in anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, race and multicultural issues, and grief and loss. I believe that therapy is most helpful in a nonjudgmental and empathic setting where you can feel comfortable as you explore your thoughts and feelings.

If you’re considering therapy, chances are there are aspects of your life that aren’t going well. Maybe your relationships are unfulfilling. Maybe you’re having a hard time adjusting to a change or traumatic experience. Maybe you’ve been feeling down, on edge, defeated, or inadequate. Maybe you’re not even sure why, but you know you’re not as satisfied as you want to be. Therapy is a place where you can better understand the issues that are getting in the way of your happiness, explore options for a more fulfilling future, and get support as you contemplate change or adjust to a difficult reality.

I believe that building a trusting therapeutic relationship is an essential component of successful therapy. I value an affirming, collaborative, systemic, and emotion-focused approach to therapy. I'm dedicated to understanding my client's stories, and the systemic, cultural, and biopsychosocial factors at play in my clients’ lives, in order to exploratively increase their self-awareness and self-understanding. I believe that this awareness and insight, paired with coping and interpersonal skills and dedication to intentionality and change, can provide the tools you need to grow and manage life stressors and struggles.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
